Hey Kevin, are you wanting a thread that explains how to retrofit it under the bed? Or a link to a gas tank kit that can go under the bed?

Kevin, the 60-72 frames are the same. Cheapest thing to use is a full size blazer tank. Get one from one of the guys who haul junk cars to the crusher. Most crushers require the gas tanks to be removed. I put a ad in Craigslist a while back and had two offers the next day for $20. Those guys just want to get rid of them.

I just put a Summit fuel cell in the frame rails of my truck. Is that what you're looking for?

Re: 1966 gas tank retro fit under bed

Kevin I used a tank from a 77-82 1/2 ton Chevy Van. Welded a 3X4 piece of angle the back of the frame rails and had to trim the forward crossmember just slightly see pic. I scrounged mine from the bone yard with straps and filler neck but, they are available new.

Re: 1966 gas tank retro fit under bed

I also had to modify the cross sill above the tank and hole saw through the frame rail for the fill hose as seen in the pic.

Aren't the frame rails closer together on the 65 and up?

Hey The Dark, tell us more about your fuel cell. How much did it cost, how do you like it, etc.

Thanks

Re: 1966 gas tank retro fit under bed

I think I paid around $200 for it. I bought it for another project that went bad, so I figured I'd use it. I just put it in the other day. I have some pix I'll try to post.

I know nothing about fuel cells but am very curious about them. What's the magic in getting them to work? What all needs to be hooked up?

I am building a 66 short step and have a buddy with a frame for a 69 short step, will this work with my 66 body. One of the rear frame rails is twisted a bit on mine and he was in the middle of building his truck got the frame done and then someone stole the body for his truck after he stripped it.

Re: 1966 gas tank retro fit under bed

It depends on which cell you have. I have one that just has a feed line at the bottom and a vent at the top. The new one, which is in the photo's, has two feed lines, a rollover vent and a return line for fuel injection or if you run a bypass type fuel regulator. One of the main things to remember is to make sure that the fuel pump is lower than the outlet on the cell. The pump should be gravity fed. As you can see in my photo, I'm going to have to put a bracket next to the cell to hang my electric pump from. If I put it up on the frame it wouldn't work properly.

I mistakenly put 60-72, what I meant to put was 63-72 are all the same. I can't remember where I found this info but I'm 99.9% sure the 63-72 frames are all identical. Of course, the easiest thing would be to take measurements. But, I'm confident you'll find that they're the same.

I was also wondering if people were just using the sending unit from the blazer tank, will this work with the stock fuel gauge?

They are basically the same with some minor differences between the '63-'66's and the '67-'72's. Those differences are 1) the frame horns at the front for the bumper is different 2) the rear cab mount bracket is a little different 3) the front crossmember in the '63-'66 frames that is the lower radiator mount is not there in the '67-'72 frame. All of these things can be changed fairly easily.

No, not without putting a resistor inline (way above my head.) Frizzle Fry did one where he used the original 60-66 sending unit and bent the float arm to allow for the shorter travel. Here is the thread. Some great info, should tell you everything you want to know about the Blazer tank install.
