Post Electric fans

while I was at the yard getting my driveshaft I also got a couple electric fans from a 90 chev lumina. They are about 13" across so they should just fit on my rad. I'm hopeing they provide enough air flow, they almost lift themselves up when I test them but I guess I'll find out when I get them hooked up. What I'm wondering is how to wire them up? can I get a thermo switch from a lumina and then a relay or....? I know some people have done this before, anyone have a wiring diagram from an aftermarket setup or something, this would be a great help, Thanks!

I think its Oreily's has a sesor that goes into the neck for the themo'. Think u can set it to were u want them to kick on.

Are you planning to just run the electric are run them with the mechanical one? I found a small electric a while back and hooked it up to come on when I have the ac on only to help cool it down. What I did was run the on/off wire from the compressor, the switch under the inside of the cab that the cable operates when you turn the ac on, to relay then have battery hot to fan and ground.

I wouldn't use the temp. sending unit from the lumina it would be to hot I would think for your truck. It's computer rized yours isn't. I would go with a aftermarket set up.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Painless Wiring offers an aftermarket electronic temperature switch (adj. thermostat). It it adjustable to the desired temp. I know a lot of guys in the street rod circles run two fans. They wire one to run constantly and then wire the second one to come on at a desired temp and then turn off at a lower desired temp.

You can get a thermostat kit outa the jegs or summit catalogs that will allow you to dial in when the fans operate... mine sits on the radiator core but I think you can get one that taps into the thermostat housing as well....

I would think the hard part is gonna be coming up with a decent way to mount your fans... I got a Flexalite Black Magic fan from summit that came with its own shroud and it works great... it's a puller type, replaced the belt-driven one. Good Luck.

If you do that, Vinnie, then you eliminate not only the mechanical fan but the big bulky factory schroud, too. Does it cool well? Wonder if I could do that on my 402 and be able to run the A/C in Tucson heat?

That sounds good for the switch, will any old parts store relay do? for 2 fans what amperage do you think they draw? Probably 14 guage wire should be enough for the fans?
I should be able to figure out the mounting though, I've made lots of things on my truck! Thanks

they claim it's good for engines up to 300 hp, which is about where mine is, plus I'm running A/C, and also have a trans cooler, so it has to pull through 3 radiators basically.... no problems.

I actually mounted the fan in the stock shroud, so it still looks kinda stock, except for the thermostat adjustment knob on the top...

I'm very happy with it, stays cool in stop n go traffic on a hot day with the A/C on... there's also a 2 fan setup that comes in its own shroud available that pulls more air, not sure how much fan your big block would need.... you can check it all out at www.summitracing.com

just looking at the 2 fan setup on the summit site, it draws 18 amps... 12 or 14 ga. should be ok.... get a heavy duty relay also, can't hurt.... check out www.summitracing.com and look up this part number.... DER-16759.... it's a relay with a probe for the radiator fins... it's what I'm using and I haven't had any problems
