VIN help '55 2nd
I have a shot at buying a straight '55 2nd series truck. It has no engine or tranny, which is fine with me since I'm going to clip it anyway. At any rate, I'm having some problems with the VIN. The VIN on the title/pink slip is 436452F255X and the VIN tag on the "A" pillar is "H255K019554". I think the "55" is indicative of a 1955, but why are the numbers in different order (H255K and F255X)? Is this the same truck or has something been switched? I've heard that the only complete VIN is located on the engine which is long gone, but I haven't been able to verify that.

The VIN on the pilar is what you should go by, the VIN on the frame does not seem to be a from a 55 TF truck. I may be incorrect but the VIN experts here will chime is.

Re: VIN help '55 2nd
H255K019554 is a 1955 3100 short bed made in Kansas city mo.
It may have been they filed for a lost vin and got 436452F255X issued to them. But there should be a vin tag there with 436452F255X. Find out whats going on prior to buying it. You should be able to check itout at DPS or DMV |

The vin on the cab in a chassis VIN. The VIN listed on the pink slip is the motor VIN. You must have an old pink slip. Back in the day the title was issued by motor VIN and not chassis VIN. Mine came with the original title as it was a 1 owner and has a VIN number of 0878449F255X. This is the motor VIN. Usually cars were sold and the DMV would change the VIN on the new title to the chassis VIN. Not sure of what year they started doing this.

Re: VIN help '55 2nd
Thanks, tubbed55. I talked to an old hotrodder last night and he told me the same thing. I have the title to another '55 that doesn't have a tag on the door post and the frame has been gone for some time. I may be able to put another '55 together and get my money back.

There should be vin number stamped on the top of the frame rail next to the steering box and under the cab on the drivers side. If body and frame are original they will match, which is the one the State should title it with. Did you get a bill of sale? It should reference the numbers on the title and truck so it is perfectly clear what was sold and bought.

Re: VIN help '55 2nd
I have a bill of sale and I'm still in touch with the last owner, I can get everything straight before I apply for the title. I'm actually going to use the body on a different chassis, I've been thru the requirements with our local guys and they laid out everything I'd need. Thanks for your help!
