My new adventure. 64 C10 build
I just got my 64 two days ago, since then I have pulled the front clip, cab, and entire from suspension off. Also have sanded the frame down and painted it up to the drive-shaft loop crossmember. I'm overly excited about this truck, I recently built a 77k20, and sold it. So far my plans are to replace the cab corners, fix the passenger rocker, and windshield surround. I have been reading about disc conversions, I think I'm going to go with a stock height 73-87 set-up, my question is this. I was almost positive that the later 12bolts are the same shafts as 10bolts, if this is true why could I not swap the 6 lug shafts for 5 lug shafts, and then use a 10bolt rear drum system? I'm going to assume that someone on here has re-wired their truck with a Painless system, but has anyone tried to install a 81-87 column also? I was taking the factory column out and it seems to be possible, I am considering attempting it for the tilt, and intermittent wipers. |

Good start and welcome from Texas!
Several tilt column threads on here. I used a column from a 77 K5 and fuse panel and harness from a 79 C10. Looks like you have the skills to make it happen. Good luck!

Re: My new adventure. 64 C10 build
I sure hope so...not trying to brag but I put my friends jeep wagoneer on 40's, my k20 on 37s, then swapped everything into my K5. Hardest part was making a mechanical clutch pedal work with a hydraulic master cylinder.
I just read your thread about what you're doing for your son's truck...that looks sweet! |

Re: My new adventure. 64 C10 build
Welcome from AZ.....
Im not sure exactly what you were meaning with the rear axle thing, but the older rear ends are narrower than the newer type. Swapping axles is not something Ive done, but the width thing is an issue to consider. My wrist kinda hurts just looking at that pile of parts you've already torn off there.

Re: My new adventure. 64 C10 build
ah...I've done multiple axle builds now. I was talking about just the shafts.
I'll probably take it apart this week and compare with some old 10b shafts I have.

There is also the issue of the '64 having a different spline count than the later('65 up) rearends. You would need to swap out the spider gears to remedy this difference. Your other options would be to buy aftermarket axles that are the correct length for your year(plus 5 lug drums-or redrill yours to 5 lug), find a 71-72 rear and swap it in or get a 73-up and weld perches on it to fit your truck. I'm sure you can find all kinds of info if you do a search but maybe this little bit will help. Good luck!
