c10 w/454 tranny question
okay heres what i got i have a 84 shortbed c10 with the stock 305 and 350 trans i already got the 454 thats getting rebuilt which is going to be pushing about 500hp what im trying to accomplish is a nice daily driver with a pro street look to it and can still hold its own on the strip but dont know what tranny to run a turbo 400 or 700r4 and im not trying to dump a whole lot of money into those at the time either i have a rebuilt 400 in my garage already but i think it would be nice to have the overdrive again as i want it to be a daily driver but i dont want to be worrying about a broken tranny either any input would be appreciated thanks and yes im a newbie to this

Gear vendors overdrive? They're kind of pricey but I've seen a couple for sale for less than $1000.00.

Re: c10 w/454 tranny question
what gears are in the rear? i went from the stock 3.07's to 3.73's and w/ the th350 driving on the freeway was almost unbearable. imho i'd sell the 400 and get a 700r4 built to handle the hp. you will be much more comfortable driving... and easier on the wallet!

Re: c10 w/454 tranny question
I would run a 200r4. Check out this months Car Craft article on the 200 to find out why...makes me wish I got one of them instead of my 700.

Re: c10 w/454 tranny question
After comparing gear ratios of the 200 and 700, I can't really see why the 200 might be better. The gears are taller until you get to overdrive... hmmmmm..

Re: c10 w/454 tranny question
A 200 can be made to handle more power, cheaper, than a 700. I don't know OD transmissions well, but the CC article ws very informative. Read it before you convince yourself a 700 is the best.
GN's and GNX's have 200's behind their engines.

Re: c10 w/454 tranny question
gear wise im looking at either a 3.73 or 3.90 and tire and wheel size 255/60/15's up front and 275/60/15 BFG Radial T/A's in the rear. with a 4/5 drop hopefully i make sense if not corrections would be appreciated thanks

Re: c10 w/454 tranny question
2004R's have a more favorable gearing spread and can use the same driveshaft as a Turbo 350 besides the advantages Bigblock73 speaks of.

Re: c10 w/454 tranny question
I had a GN for a while, and I know plenty of guys that smoked their 200's. Seems like guys with the really fast cars had switched to a th400.
Personally, I'm lovin' my 4l80e. It is stronger in stock form than most 'beefed up' 700's or 200's. My advice is to use the rebuilt th400 you already have. Then you decide you really want overdrive, either scrounge around and find a '96 or later 4l80e in good shape or get a Gearvendors unit.
