pulled engine/transmission today
I have pulled the engine and transmission today. I would like to ask if anyone knows what this bracket in the picture is for it is on the right side and above the starter? The torque converter do I need to fill it before I put it on the engine or wait until the engine and transmission are back in the truck?
I am replacing the housing seal and the front pump seal and filter. Is there anything else that needs to be replaced while I have the transmission out? Have the Felpro ks2600 kit coming Monday and will start to replace the engine gaskets. I am thinking about timing chain and water pump not sure? The inline filter in the picture is that normal or was the filter added later. I was thinking that a rubber hose connected the metal line to the fuel pump but now there is a filter. Is that alright? Here are some pictures |

Don't know what the bracket is.
Yes fill the converter before installing it. Timing chain, you might as well check out since it is easy to get to. That is an add on filter, sounds like you have a good plan!

If your going to pull the oil pan, might want to install a new oil pump while you're at it.

Wonder if that bracket is some sort of gaurd for tranny cooler lines.

Re: pulled engine/transmission today
you should plan on getting a new timing chain. I wouldn't bother with a new oil pump unless your oil pressure was low, but then you probably have other problems too.
If the converter is new/rebuilt, then dump a bottle of ATF in it. If you remove the old one, and put it back in the tranny, then don't bother, it has 3 or 4 in it already. Been a while since I messed with a chevy fuel pump, you want that filter on the pump to carb side, not on the pump to tank side. nothing wrong with having it, actually a very good idea. |

Re: pulled engine/transmission today
I have only seen those brackets on 72's with small block engines. Is yours a 72? They were on both side I believe. The only thing I can think of that they might be for is to direct air on to the exhaust manifolds to try to keep them cool??? They have a curve to them at the rear. Now thats just my guess, I have never been able to find out anything about them either. They make changing the spark plus a real pain! Most of them have been removed and thrown away.

Re: pulled engine/transmission today
How do I check to see if water pump is bad?
I am getting a timing chain but how would I check to see if I need to replace the gears also? Hope to replace all these things, with seals and gaskets this weekend!! |
