NEED INPUT!! What 5 speed tranny will bolt up to a NP205 transfer case? I'm building a 57 GMC and making it a 4x4 with corporate 10 bolts out of a Blazer. I want to run a manual 5 instead of the 350 its hooked up to. Any suggestions would be great. It's not for crawling.....more for daily driver use.

You best choice would a NV4500 found in 93-95 Chevy trucks but you will need to use a 85 or newer 205 with the 32 spline input.

Cheapest would be find the late 205.But there are only so many out there.

If this is gonna be a driver, why not get the light duty 5 speeds that came in the 88-up trucks?? They are all over the place in yards, and you can bolt on a 208/241 pass drop. But a 4500 will work of course, but they bring alot more money when you do find them. If you need a pass drop 205, I have one out of an 86 1 ton. Just the case, adaptor is too long and has a hole in it....

Do you have a 205 already. IF you do and it's the racetrack bolt patter like stated above you can use an AA adapter or find a round pattern 205. You can also purchase just an empty case that is drilled with the round bolt pattern.

Thanks for all the info. I already have the NP205. It has been tough to find a reasonably priced 5 speed to fit. I saw the NV4500 but they are pricey. I had a 93 GMC 2wd with a manual tranny and that was great. But I don't know which one it was. The NP205 is out of the 86 Blazer. So I was told. I hope their is a simple solution to my problem in a pick a part yard. Any suggestions with this added info?

That '93 GMC 2wd probably had a NV3500, which were also available in a 4x4 version. Those are a bit easier to find and typically not as expensive. I would suggest checking into that and see if it is possible to mate it up to your 205. since your 205 is a '86 model, it should be the round pattern.

Is this for sure a 205?? If it came out of an 86 Blazer it's not. They only came with 208s. Could be swapped in, not hard to do.

The guy I got it from said it was a 205. I trust him. I have not looked too much at it since I got it a while ago. I have a learning curve on transfer cases. That is why I joined this forum. You guys have been a great help. I'll look into it. What are my identifying factors?

Look on the back o the case,there`s an I.D. tag.Also,the NP205 will have a vertical rectangle plate cover bolted on the side.That`s the pto attaching point,not found on a 208.

205 - cast iron case w/ the above mentioned pto mounting point on one side.

I just put a t5 in my 64 4 x 4 panel hooked up to an independent 205. 283 in frt of it. I don't drive it hard and if the trans give me a problem then I will upgrade it to a tremec
I just took out a NP 5spd o/d and a 453 Detroit

Anyone care to comment on using an NV4500 and an 85 NP208 TC? The PO apparently had an 85 parts truck so various things, including the trans and TC are from the 85.

BTW: I just did a search and Ebay has NV4500s out of Dallas for $995. Seems pretty cheap.

Is there a source for shifters for these things other than the scrap yard?

Why not just stick with the th350 its already bolted too. You could buy two of 'em with what that 5spd is gonna cost...not too mention the convenience of an automatic.

Well, either way just make sure you stick with the 205. I love my part-time 203 but would prefer a 205 any day of the week!

I am looking into the 700r4 too. Thanks earl. That may be the route to go down the line. I just hope to find my runner first and see what $ I have left over for the upgrades when all is mostly finished.

Just finished nv4500/205 install. Not a drop in deal by any means. It is overkill unless you are planning on more than just driving. We installed it in a 68 K20. You can see the install in our thread in the 4x4 project section
