I saw a neat truck today...

A guy pulled up to our Speed Shop today... In a 71/72 3/4ton, 4x4, 454cid (yes, factory 454 emblems) Tach/vacumn dash, tilt wheel, tow hooks, rust free (even under the battery) 60,xxx truck...
I was drooling so much, my boss was looking for a lady in the truck...

I got pictures, but they are crappy cell phone pics...

Re: I saw a neat truck today...

pics up....
I didn't know they did a factory 454... He was mumbling something about dealer installed option only 454, only motor other that 396/402 BBC ever put in one of our trucks from factory was a 427. and only one, it was for a Nascar guy (don't rember the name) so he says.

Also, I was really wanting to peek at the glove box listing, but didn't want to offend him...
enjoy the pictures....

Re: I saw a neat truck today...

Those are most likely the aftermarket emblems... Only BB engine in 67-72 that I have EVER seen or heard of were the 396 and 400(402).

That's exactly what I thought..... He was talking (confidently) that Only BB engine were the 396 and 400(402), But you could get a 454 in one at the dealership and the emblems/motor was a (before sold new) dealer option... Then thats when he grined an said... "did you know only 1 engine other that the 396 & 402 was ever installed in these model trucks? It was a 427 for insert Nascar guys name here Yep, true story... only 1 ever done with something other than the 396's & 402's.... But you could get a 454 as a dealer installed option"..... blah, blah, blah....
I'm not saying he's right or wrong.... just saying it was an interesting conversation....
But, I wish I had that truck... whatever it is.....

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: I saw a neat truck today...

You could never get a big block in a 4x4, regardless of the size.

You can buy those 454 emblems from any 67-72 parts vendor.

there's a bunch of stuff that isn't 'right' on that truck.
the guy is talkin out his tail pipe. The 454 isn't original, nor is it dealer installed.... unless it was his crack dealer anyways.

I like it,but...Is it a rare Harley Davidson model,too?
The 454 prolly came out of the truck the tow hooks came off.He prolly bought the emblems when he bought the dash bezel. That guy must use Ebay for his educater.we all saw that sale with the "original" 427.I know one thing,I don`t care how shiney or snazzy such a rare truck is.But,what self-respecting rare factory optioned Chevy truck owner would run a messed up Ford hubcap?Oy vey....

Re: I saw a neat truck today...

I certainly don't have the knowledge to comment on the if's involved here, but it's kinda strange to me that the guy would take the time to install all of the desirable options and not have a cheapo paint job done at least.

Even with non original stuff installed a rust free body is worth enough to protect it with some cheap paint...

I would say the PO that sold him the truck sold him that line of BULL*** to sell him the truck at the outragous price he paid for it. Not that i know this for sure but most people that have to brag alot really dont know what their talking about. Been my experience anyway.

Re: I saw a neat truck today...

It is a neat truck, but no big blocks in 4x4s, and no 454s in these trucks. The towhooks are 73 and newer. The vacuum dash is out of a bigger truck. I would bet there is no glove box sticker. Still looks pretty clean however.

Re: I saw a neat truck today...

my cousin has a 72 chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 that has had a 402 in it since 72. the original owner bought it and installed a big overhead camper on it, took it to the mountains and didn't like the lack of power from the 350 so when he got home and unloaded the camper, he drove it to a local dealership and had a new 402 put in. we pulled the 402 out when my cousin bought it, did some repairs where they clearanced things with a torch and brought it back to original.
by the way, after removing the big block, i had serious doubts that a dealership did the actual swap due to the shoddy workmanship but thats the story the original owner told my cousin.

You are right, Money is the only barrier to getting the vehicle with the engine you wanted straight from the dealer, that said, I seriously boubt it was installed at the dealership, and 100 % sure they did not put a 454 emblem on it after they did it.

I like to ask people who have "Super Rare Vehicles" Why no one wanted it? What was wrong with them? Will you have a hard time getting rid of it? Do you regret buying it? ....... They always stammer a minute then look at me like I am a dumb@$$, I love that look..
Because they are only half right.

Re: I saw a neat truck today...

That's a really nice clean straight truck!

If he bought it like that and was told it was factory, and it "appeared" factory (hey, it even has the right emblems and all right?) then most people would believe it to be true. Only nuts like us know it isn't

If someone showed me a 69 Camaro with an oddball engine in it (something GM actually made back then, I'm not dumb enough to fall for "stock 383"), it looked installed correctly and had the correct badges on the car, I would have no friggin' clue if it was factory or not. But I'm sure camaro nuts would be like, oh you idiot, they NEVER came with that engine!

Re: I saw a neat truck today...

Good thing I didn't advertise this thread as "all original rare factory options" truck, You purists woulda hung me....
notice I said
"I didn't know they did a factory 454... ...I was really wanting to peek at the glove box listing"

Reason I was drooling... I would love to have this truck, not because of it originality (or lack of) but due to, If I built a 4x4, thats what I'd like to have & rust free to boot.

My thoughts.... I believe the truck has been repainted and made to look used, So is it an original rust free? I don't think so (but ???). I couldn't tell you a factory tow hook from a fish hook, but.... I thought ya'll would like to see it for what it is, not for what it's not...

I'd take it...

Oh, and it's got brand new aluminum upper & lower pulleys on it... and he paid cash... hehehe

Re: I saw a neat truck today...

Who is to say the guy didn't have a dealer install that 454. Who! I agree it wouldn't be a option for the masses but if some one wanted it bad enough any good dealer would have jumped on installing it for them. I don't think his story is all truthfull but who is to say. Just because some book says so doesn't mean it's not true. My dad had some stuff installed by dealers back in the 70"s that wasn't in no book.

Re: I saw a neat truck today...

Intersting truck any way you stack it... tilt and tach are original and the 454 emblem is in place of the "4 wheel drive" emblem that could have gone there. Tow hooks are dead wrong as stated though... thanks for posting...

Looks like it would be a good driver truck though..
