How to tell the difference between Dana44 and Dana60

Is there a way to tell the difference between a Dana 44 and a Dana 60 from the outside?

Not a great pic, but it's all I have right now. It's a 71 C20 if that makes a difference.

That pic is a Dana 70. Because of the "slants" on the sides of the pumpkin.

Here is a Dana 70:

Re: How to tell the difference between Dana44 and Dana60

This article says the 60 and the 70 look almost identical:

http://www.coloradok.com/axleguide.shtml

Not sure why this truck would have a 70. It's missing some of the extra suspension components that you have in your pic.

Are the housings the same? Is the only way to tell by measuring the ring gear?

Now that I see some others it does look more like a 60\70 than a 44.

My '72 C-20 had a DANA 60, so that would be my guess.

Re: How to tell the difference between Dana44 and Dana60

This post says 44 or 60 will be stamped on the webbing, but I don't know if that is only for front axles.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...ghlight=dana60

I'm tired of guessing, I'm going to go out and look.

Mystery solved. It's a 60, stamped on the webbing.

Re: How to tell the difference between Dana44 and Dana60

I think the number is cast into the housing on the lower part of what is pictured. Kind of below where the axle tube goes into the housing. Now you should be confused...

Re: How to tell the difference between Dana44 and Dana60

A 3/4t would only have a Dana60,no Dana44.There were no 8-lug Dana44s.There were rare 6-lug Dana60s in 1/2t.Those weren`t full-floating like an 8-lug.

That Dana 60 6 lug rear end is pretty unusual. Definately a keeper.

Re: How to tell the difference between Dana44 and Dana60

Are you sure that 3/4 ton 4x4's had Dana 60's? I thought they had Dana 44's with bigger knuckles? I have a 72 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4, and the center pumpkin looked the same as the pumpkin in the 72 1/2 ton 4x4 I just sold. Everyone I have talked to said that Dana 60's were "USUALLY" on found under the fronts of 1 tons.

Re: How to tell the difference between Dana44 and Dana60

From what I recall when I was looking up my axle, it was 44s up front and 60s in back for most 4x4s (from the big 3)...

I maybe wrong, but that's what I recall.

Re: How to tell the difference between Dana44 and Dana60

We`re talking rear axles here. These days when you hear Dana60 you think one ton 4wd front axles. No one tone 4wds back then,so no Dana60 front axles. Both K/10s and K/20s used Dana44s up front.

Re: How to tell the difference between Dana44 and Dana60

I have seen more Dana 60's in GMC's than Chevys. Chevys usually had the HO52 or 72 in them.

Re: How to tell the difference between Dana44 and Dana60

I've got a 6 lug dana 60 in my '68 gmc 1/2 ton. It's not the original. It came out of a '69 gmc. I had a dana 44 when i got the truck 15 years ago, but when i was in high school i tore the sucker up. Damn high school kids.
