Differances in SPID'S
I started looking at the differances in the spids list in special-K post about them. Found some interesting stuff in just the couple I have and what was posted in his post.
These are mine I have. This one is on the glove box of the 71 as of now. Here are 2 that I pulled off other trucks. #1 #2 These are some in the other post, so if you see yours I posted it here for looking at the defferances. special-K ![]() LockDoc Longhorn Man Joesjunk Lugnut64052 67chip72

Re: Differances in SPID'S
ChevLoRay
69gumby 70cstjr ![]() The Tach numbers are differant, One is a 427 V-8 according to the spid Not a 427 diesel engine. So why are the #'s differant Huh? LockDoc, this is what you posted tach U16AH ChevLoRay, this is what you posted tach 4U16EA. Yours also has the speed warning listed too! 4 from bottom right. Best I can tell it's 4U15KA. 70cstjr has the tach as U16. Tinted glass is differant. Chrome front bumper is differant. What is the defferance between all weather A/C and the 4 seasons A/C? Custome Delux package #'s are basicly the same but aren't always spelled out. Guess maybe the differance between the day of the week they typed them up as when the truck was built. Does anyone have a book that can confirm these numbers for us.

Re: Differances in SPID'S
The red door SPID looks strange. Never seen one double spaced with alignment issues. Definately has been on there for years, but my hunch is that the dealership, before deliverd to original buyer, may have redone the SPID when some equipment was changed out?

Re: Differances in SPID'S
Andy, the one thing I've noticed is that on the three 69's I have, all options began with a 4 just ChevLoRay's '69. I don't know why that is, but they do.

Re: Differances in SPID'S
factorystock,
the red door one isn't factory. That's the one I have and I typed it myself after I put some of that stuff on the truck. I have noticed things that have abbrevated numbers and some with totally differant numbers. I wonder if it had to do with what day of the week it was built...like you never want a car built on Monday's or Friday's! If you have your spid please post it here so we can all pick over the codes. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Re: Differances in SPID'S
Different factories did different things with the spid. In atlanta they only used the standard 3 letter id- U16 for tach, but baltimore for example used the prefix before and letters after the ption number or RPO- regular production option. Some plants used Cheyenne Super Sport others used cheyenne super on spid- both ye9 option number. I think the prefix/ suffix for lack of better term was a individual factory thing as all options are the same number except the one you created with different letters in front or after. So in short tinted glass is always A11 but it may have different numbers or letters in front or after - the key is what is in the middle

Thank you!
That would explain a lot of the differances in the SPIDS. ![]() ![]()

Re: Differances in SPID'S
The SPID I posted is from a truck that doesn't belong to me. I looked at my SPID and it also has the "4" preceeding the option. My truck was built at St. Louis, so as indicated above, maybe it was plant that determined whether it had that digit, or not. Maybe it was a reference to a day, or a shift, or a crew....regardless, it doesn't affect the item.
Nice posting to peruse the readin' material. We are an anal bunch, huh?

Re: Differances in SPID'S
WOW.. learn something new everyday with these trucks.. Being more of a hot rodder and custom guy I never cared much what was factory or not so I never paid much attention to the SPID's before, Now I have to go dig out all my glove box doors take some pics for reference..
One thing I have noticed recently after parting out numerous 67/68 GMCs is most of them never had a SPID at all!! Anyone else run across this?? |

I wish there was a book or a website to look at and read about this stuff. I know I need to redo my SPID now too!

Re: Differances in SPID'S
The code system originated in 1963 but SPID decals in glove boxes were not installed in Chevy pickups till 1966.
