Powdercoated rally wheels for Matt67350

Here you go buddy. Blasted bare, powdered with rally wheel silver, cured, powdered with clear and baked again. I think they look great.

The pictures aren't so hot because the lighting in my shop is weak, but they look great in the sunlight.

Nice work on the rally wheels Kevin, those turned out nice. Quick question, did you have any issues w/ the crevice area (the part between the rim and the center piece of the wheel)? I know that tcb-1 had some wheels PC'd and they ended up bubbling out and ruining the finish. After reading several posts from his thread we weren't able to come to a final conclusion if it was caused by poor cleaning by the PC'er or just an impossible item to PC.

That's a common problem when coating wheels. To keep this from happening, I cook all wheels at 550 degrees for a full hour prior to any work. This cooks all of the goop out of the crevices to make darn sure it doesn't bite me later. Plus, I have a pretty powerful gun, so it tends to really pull the powder deep into the recesses. On these wheels, there were no problems in the seam at all.

I was wondering how it would look on the 17.5" dually wheels that came on my '67 C-30. It really doesn't matter what you do it on, I'd just like to see it beside something that is polished aluminum maybe. I don't expect it to look like chrome, but if it looked something like polished aluminum (basically better than silver paint) I'd consider having them done. I can buy tires for them.

If the wheels are decent without too much paint or rust, it runs about 30-40 a wheel for turn key job, blasting, powder and clear coat.

Figure an extra 10 per wheel for lots of extra paint that I have to remove.

I wil get the latch and support out later this week. They have been blasted,primered and painted with rustoleum so they should clean back up easily in your cabinet. I will pm you when they go out and paypal you the money for return shipping etc. thanks Harold

I had my rallye wheels powder-coated about three years ago. When a tire shop was removing them, they chipped the finish trying to remove the police cap. I talked to my friend who did the coating, and he said he can mix some powder with acetone and touch it up.

How would you go about touching up a chip? Is he right about the procedure?

Your prices are right on. My wheels were new, from Wheel Vintiques and I paid $150 for four wheels, in red.

your too cheap, and looks like you know what your doing which amazingly is not the norm in the PC business. There are probably a dozen shops here in OKC and probably 2 or 3 actually know what they are doing.

Mix some powder with MEK. Make a slurry out of it and dab it on with a q-tip.

Can you do a '69 grille? My truck has a new grille but the guy I bought it from tried cleaning it with a solvent that completely etched it. I've wondered about the chrome powdercoat. Will it work on that thin metal?

It's going to be about a month before I can do anything as large as a grille. I'm building the bigger oven currently. It will be 6 feet long, 4 feet high and 2 feet wide. I should be able to do bumpers, grilles, rear control arms, rearend housings and the like.

yeah man the shops here in okc kinda suck. and the big one just shut down. left a lot of racers with there stuff still inside. id be willing to even bring my stuff down there to you. good excuse to get away.

I read about that shop on a powdercoating forum board. It seems they lost their major account, some boat engine manufacturer. Without that account, they had to fold.

I'm not going anywhere though. I have a full time bread and butter career, this is just a 20 day a month gig for me. I do one job at a time, with the same attention to detail as I show my own parts. Plus, I value my reputation and don't want my name or reputation drug through the mud.

Superior Finish off Waterloo rd in Edmond. Wesley is the only guy I will take my powdercoating too even if he is 60 miles from me.
