What is this thing?

It "plugs" into the back on my gear indicator pointer, is there supposed to be a light there?

Fiber optic. The other end plugs into a light in your dash cluster.

Re: What is this thing?

As long as the other end is into the cluster, it should light up (as long as the light isn't blown). Turn on your headlights, and the end of it should glow.

Re: What is this thing?

It gets the light from the bulb in the dash cluster. Bet you never would have guessed that these old trucks had fiberoptic cables in them...LOL!

Its probably either the bulb or its its not hooked up to the cluster. Unless its cut or broke, there is really no way the cable wouldn't work.
