Won't Start

yesterday I was working on getting the horn to blow, and now this..

Now I might have another problem, when i went out today to work on the horn, I'm not getting any juice to the switch or something, radio plays but will not turn over. Do you think jumping the
horn relay groung wire did something? I checked all the fuses, must be something simple but I need help again.

Ok, I just jump it with a srew driver on the starter , It started, I turned the key off but it won't restart. Do you think I may of shorted out the switch buy jumping the horn relay?

Are yoou calling the neutral start switch the safety switch? If so it has 2 purple wires and the backup light wires on it . You can take the purple wires off and jump them together and see if it will start with the key switch. Make sure it isn't in gear.

This is the neutral start switch and it is mounted on the steering column.

Re: Won't Start

The purple wires were already off of the Neutrel Safety Switch from the PO, I didn't even know it. It starts right up from a hot wire to the starter, before I was working on the horn relay, it too was already unhooked. What do you think now? By me jumping the Horn relay black wire to a meatl ground must of shorted something out, is there a inline fuse link somewhere? TJ

Re: Won't Start

The PO disconnected the burple wire from the neutral safety switch... was there a jumper in there? (should be, ior it would have never started) Double check that the jumper wire is still in place.
Testing the horn like that would do nothing at all to the start circuit.

Re: Won't Start

for a quickie, you can do it like this (I know, wrong plug, but you get the idea)

For a slightly better one, make a wire like the white one on the lower left

In reality, it may have been plugged in and you pumped it just right for it to jump off, and you never noticed it till it was off?
Maybe?
You could plug it in and see if it starts.

Re: Won't Start

I thnk it was always off because thinking back now I remember I could start my truck in gear, so this would show it was probally off, correct? But I didn't see no jumper. How else would it of started? Everhing was fine until I ran that jumper to the horn relay and left it attached but not touching anything. Then came back today to go somewhere and turn the key and nothing. Now it seems I may all kinds of different things going on. How about the coil, could it of done something to it> I did have the key on about 5 mintues when testing the Relay ground? TJ

Re: Won't Start

I'm sure the NSS wire was off, also I didn't see a jump wire but it did start until I started messing with the horn relay. I'm going to retrace the wires today Going to try a use a jump wire on the NSS plug to see if it will work. TJ

Re: Won't Start

Long-Horn, You the man....I hooked up the small jumper wire to the NSS plug and it started right up. It made my day because I thought I was going to have all kinds of problems, since it was unhooked and I did't see no jumpper. I must of knock something off but I can't see nothing that fell onto the floor or any other wiires. Thanks , again, now I 'm back to getting the horn to work, I thinking of just insalling a push button on the side.

Re: Won't Start

instead of the jumper wire(unsafe issue) did you try just plugging it into the neutral safty switch to see if you could get it to work like GM had it working from the factory??

Re: Won't Start

cdowns.... this isn't aimed at you at all....
I always smile and chuckle a little... people panic when an automatic has the NSS bypassed... yet, manual shift cars and trucks didn't have a safety switch untill the 80's. And they are VERY commonly parked in first or reverse.
Always strikes me as amusing.

Re: Won't Start

what's really amusing is up in the northeast it seems saafty inspectors take great delight in charging young guys anywhere between $30-$50 and failing them for disconnected neutral safety switchs// then they need to fix the problem they should have fixed the first time and PAY AGAIN//i love florida NO INSPECTIONS

Re: Won't Start

inspection? whats that?
In tx I talked my way out of a NSS fault on my inspection.
Told him it was originally a manual shift tranny and they didn't come with it.
Here's your sticker sir.

If I was to replace the NSS, is it just a bolt on and off job?
