Seatbelts: Why used when LMC has them?
LMC has a retractable kit that looks pretty good or $90. Why are guys going to junkyards to find mid-90s sets? Are they better somehow?

Re: Seatbelts: Why used when LMC has them?
I think cost is a major factor, the LMC retractable belts and others are around $90 each for driver and passenger. Add another $30 and tax and you're approaching $250. I had a set of early 90's belts in my truck at one time with a matching seat and they were free or cheap.

I'd like nothng more than to get some American made belts for the truck, but where to get them? I assume the LMC kit is Chinese.

I just ordered a pair for my '72 from here:
http://www.trubelt.com/products/details/id/2 They cost ~$135 total and you can get any hardware you need for them. The quality is good and I like the aviation style latches personally. |

Re: Seatbelts: Why used when LMC has them?
well, heck I don't know about the tax but I know that S-10 belts = inexpensive and new belts = more expensive. To answer your question, I don't think S-10 belts are superior, just cheaper.
I called Cheyenne Super Man the other day and he is going to redo my factory lap belts. It is expensive, but the stockers look the best, and for a Sunday driver will function just fine.

Re: Seatbelts: Why used when LMC has them?
S10 belts are metal, and say "Genuine Chevrolet" on them, I think
They look better and are cheaper IMO. |

Re: Seatbelts: Why used when LMC has them?
Just an observation:
I'm not saying that you should or shouldn't buy seats from used/salvage vehicles, but in all the years of looking inside vehicles in junkyards, I have never seen a seatbelt torn in half. I think one has to use common sense. If it's frayed or just looks very old, then it not safe. |

Re: Seatbelts: Why used when LMC has them?
I'm wondering now if the LMC retractable 3-point set (shoulder belt kit) has the ratcheting lock thingie in it where it locks when there's a sudden forward movement (from an impact). LMC can't tell me.
Anyone know?

Re: Seatbelts: Why used when LMC has them?
it would have to, typically it's an "inertia" mechanism. There's a weight that locks the retractor when it swings too far from center, at least that's what I found last time I took one apart (I was curious too).

Re: Seatbelts: Why used when LMC has them?
Of course it does. If it didn't then what use would the seat belts be if they didn't lock?

Re: Seatbelts: Why used when LMC has them?
They could be like the original retractable seatbelts. They didn't have the inertia mechanism. They only retract to the stowed position when your not wearing them. When you are wearing them, the belt is pulled out as far as it goes, and the other half is adjustable to make the belt tight. That is the way the factory l & r belts were.
BTW Classic parts also sells the aviation style belts. I plan on buying a couple for the back seat of my new burb.

Re: Seatbelts: Why used when LMC has them?
I got mine from LMC and they fit perfect and since my truck is far from original it did not matter...
