rear ends

my 84 has a 454 and a 700R4. The usual engine mods, a loose converter and a 3.42 10 bolt. What are your experiences with these rear ends? I have visions of it exploding if this thing ever hooks. How strong are they? The truck will never see slicks or drag radials,(as of today)

Re: rear ends

Personal Experience. These will blow up. I blew mine apart, well actually sheared the right side axle shaft, which then twisted the driveshaft, & blew apart new u joints. Then as I was pulling it home (not realizing the internal damage to the rear end) the right side axle shaft and everything attatched to it 'walked' out of the housing.

I will try to post a pic of it shortly.

Re: rear ends

10 bolt is a good rear end, for a lawn tractor. Get a 12 bolt if your going to use it for a working truck and the occasional stop light drags. If your going to hammer it, go for 14 bolt. jim

God, Guts and Guns made America and God, Guts and Guns will preserve it! The worst thing you could do is get into my sights, but that don't matter, you'll never know it, cause you'll never hear the shotJim or Paladin whichever you choose.

Re: rear ends

Hmmmm, I've heard many times that a 8.5" 10-bolt is pretty strong. I would be more worried about the 700r4.

Re: rear ends

I have used the 10 bolt for 5 years. Went through probably 6 bottles of nitrous with a 150 shot using a healthy 350. Never had a problem with the rear end but I did bust the tranny. I think they can be a good rear end as long as you aren't crazy with it. I agree the 700R4 would probably be the weakest link
