How to define horsepower by casting number
Hello, can anyone tell me if I can define the standard horsepower of my engine by the casting number? I have a 71 c10 with a , I believe, 1986 350 engine.
The castingnumber is 14088548 which I found on the rear of the engine on the passengerside. On the front side I found the engine number I think but it is very hard to read. I want to define the Suffix code which looks to be UPN. But this code I cannot find back as being a suffix code anywere on the net. Thanks fro any usable information !! Anton |

Re: How to define horsepower by casting number
The horsepower is hard to determine by the casting number because you can't tell what it came in and how it was optioned by the casting number. I can tell you that is a 86-88 350 and can be 2 bolt or a 4 bolt main. Considering that most 350's in those years were TBI engines it probably came in the 200 - 210 @ 4000 RPM range and around 300 ft lbs of TQ @ 2800 RPM. If it is an '86, it couldn't be a IROC TPI engine because the 350 TPI did not appear until 1987.

I will look up UPN. Might want to hit it with a wire bruch, then some wd40 to see it clearly. Most motors from mid70s-all 80s were low hp though. Most 350 engines had only 165-210 hp.

V0313UPN (So the last 3 should be the suffix codeas I understood) CG(or 0) 331714 (which should be a part of the complete VIN number of the car it used to be in. If you guys can find and give any more info by those numbers then it would be great. I looked whole weekend on the internet but couldn't find much... To get the truck through inspection here I need to know what engine it is and the horsepower (original). Thanks for all info and p.s.; your classic trucks rule !!! I enjoy it even though I cannot yet hit the road with it !! Anton. |

Here is a great website for the casting numbers, but they don't have the stamping codes. www.mortec.com I imagine parts and info is tough to get and pricey in foreign lands. I love seeing interest in these old trucks abroad. Let's see some pics of your ride!

Re: How to define horsepower by casting number
Closest I could find was "URN" 1983 - with 165 horse, 4bbl found in 1/2-1ton trucks. Could you be mistaking the R for a P? they are close and a bad stamping would make it even harder to read than it already is. If you could get the date code on the block that would confirm as well. Date Code should be on the passenger side rear of the block - opposite the casting numbers.
"URN" = 1983 350 conv.cab L LS9 165 4 C-10 to 3500 Source: http://www.nastyz28.com/gm-chevy-cod...s-suffix-9.php
