1 ton frame

Does any one have a picture if a one ton frame? Just finished cleaning mine up and I know its missing 4 supports. I need to fabricate them up but would like to see what they look like.

Is the 1/2 and the ton much different? I only ask because that looks a lot like my 1/2 ton.

Thicker frame or is is just missing supports?

Up towards your muffler on the under side of my frame there are factory rivets that someone who had the truck before me ground off the tops of them to add a second frame and winch.

Yes I do think the frames are a lot a like, I a few diff I see is the coil spring. Yours has 4, I think mine has six. I think the dia of the material that they mad the spring out of is thicker for the one tons.

With that style of suspension there aren't any x-members between the trailing arm x-member and the shock mount x-member. What you're most likely seeing on the top of the frame behind the cab, is where the brackets for the bed cross sills were.

As I posted last night, I believe what you have is a converted C20. All of the C30's I've seen of this vintage had leaf springs in the rear. Another thing I noticed on your truck is the presence of a splash shields on the drivers side cab corner. These were used with stepside beds.

Hopefully one of the authority's on these trucks will chime in....Lilred, factory stock

I can post up a pic of my C30 tomorrow, I have a pic on the computer at the shop.

Ya some pictures of your C30 would be great. I know the cab is a C20, but I can also see that the cab was not original to this frame. As far as the leaf springs I know GM was big on them in the one tons but for some reason I thought that Chevy used coil springs for a while... I need to get to the vin on the frame to really figure this out. This truck has been a great learning experience either way though. Thanks for giving me a hand with this.

OK thanks, looks like I have some more investigation to do... It weird because every thing looks to be original on the frame... I guess the vin number on the frame will be the tell all... I wonder if I can find those brackets that were there for the bed?

Here are a few of my white C30. I can take some additional photos of the rear frame, if you need them. The frame VIN on the 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton models is on the driver side frame rail, adjacent to the exhaust manifold and it may be in the same location on the C30, 1 ton trucks. Have you looked there?

Yes I found a number under the cab near the driver side door but not sure its a VIN # VIN 3829595 9 28 62.....

So I found the VIN on the frame and this is what I came up with....
VIN S113673
Model Year 1961
Chassis (unknown code)
Body Style Motor Home
Series (unknown code) with optional 7800 GVW (1 ton) Plate
Assembly Plant GMAD Detroit
Sequential Number


Any ideas????

I see what threw you off, the # under the cab, is actually stamped on top of the frame rail. You have to pull the cab to see it, the other # you found is a part# and date code for the frame rail.

Here are some pics of my '66 C30. It's a longer wheelbase than yours, but the configuration of the frame would be the same. And as you can see the leaf springs in the rear. GM did use coil springs in the rear of both C10 and C20 trucks from 1960 thru 1972. However leafs were available as an option, but a little more common on GMC's. Like I said before, all the C30's I've seen in these years were leaf springs in the rear.

Thanks for the pictures. I think with the help of everyone we figured out that the cab is original to the frame and it is a 3/4ton dually. The gentleman I bought the truck from swears he has the paper work where his father order the truck like this (3/4ton dually) but I can not find any other truck ever made like this. Not sure what to believe??????????
