Brand new cab
Does anyone know where I could order a brand new cab from? Bodyman wants thousands to repair mine (cab corners, rockers, floor all need replacing, you know the drill) Thought maybe better of going with new. I am in Canada and good bodies are hard to find!!!

Re: Brand new cab
They don't make one at this time, sorry. We all wish they did. Probably have to look for a better one. Could look in the for sale section.

Re: Brand new cab
I've got several really nice cabs down here. Not sure how much or how you would get them shipped......

Re: Brand new cab
yep, the fiberglass one is the only game in town.
You can either pay your body guy to rebuild your cab... or locate a cab/whole truck in the desert south west and swap it out. You can always sell off the rest of the truck to make back your money. (in theory anyways) |

Re: Brand new cab
You can buy a wire feed for about $350.00, patch panels for about $100.00, and a grinder for about $50.00, and have some fun. Nice thing about working with metal is you don't have to burn it when you make a mistake, You just cuss it apart and start over.

Re: Brand new cab
You know I haven't done any welding or bodywork since High school but maybe I should give it a try. Cant make it any worse than it is right now. I have never used a wirefeed before. Is it that difficult? I woiuldn't know what the amperage should be set to but I guess if I start burning holes it would be a good indicator to turn it down eh?

Re: Brand new cab
Get a good Miller 135/140 with gas and a cart ($700 USD) and it will plug into 110V and handle any sheetmetal you throw at it. Or a little less for a Hobart from National Tool online and they ship.
I put an entire floor into my cab. Good part that is out now with supports and all. Cost about $400ish USD.

Re: Brand new cab
Mig welders work great once you get them set up. What part of the city are you in. Half hour lesson and some practices you would be up and running. The problem with the body shops in Calgary is they are so busy doing insurance work the only way they are going to do resto work is if they make it worth there while

Re: Brand new cab
The only way to have a "rust free" is to tear one apart and fix up one believe me i looked hard and spend alot of time and money to come to this realization. That is why I decide to go the way I did on project cod fish. It just depends on what you want for me I am building a truck I hope to have for years to come. These trucks lasted well for 20 years, but with todays primer and paint it will last longer than that. In short it is all about what you can afford although I have built and done three of these truck only to be disappointed in the way in which some part of it turned out only to sell them because of those issues get and do the best you can afford and you will be money ahead. Just my two cents

Re: Brand new cab
Thanks to all of you for your comments, I feel very encouraged by all!! Truly! This truck is a keeper for me so I want to do it right. When I was 18 I bought a 1970 Chevelle SS 454 LS6 (yes that's right LS6) with only 40000 original miles. I restored it and kept it 7 years until I got married to a woman who refused to drive in it. I let the car go when my better judgement told me to let the woman go. I let her go 20 years later and now am going to try another resto. Current girlfriend says if I take on this project it has to be a keeper because she does not want me to cry over this truck the way I still cry over that Chevelle. Squirel, I would certainly appreciate any and all advice you have for me, I am just waiting to get truck into rented garage so I can go mad on it!! Hoping next day or 2!!

Re: Brand new cab
I'm in the same boat as you. My 72 Super has rusted corners, rockers, and floor. I've got a MIG welder and a good friend who is a body man so we are going to go for it and repair it.
How hard on a scale of 1 (easy) to 10 (impossible) would you guys rate this project? |

Re: Brand new cab
Check your community education catalog. I took a one night a week class from a guy that teaches at a vo-tech down in the Cities. I got the best of everything. In addition to learing how to run a Mig welder you'll learn the process so when confronted with somehting other than a rusty cab in an environmentally controlled shop you'll be able to fix/repair it correct the first time.
