has anyone converted a 2wd to a 4wd?
has any one made a 2 wheel drive truck in to a 4 wheel drive. I have my 2wd truck and i really want to make it to a four wheel drive truck. I dont think i could sell my truck and get what i would need to buy a 4 wheel drive, plus if i make it myself i well know everything about it. If anyone has picture and info on what kit they my have used that would be a big help. thanks ahead of time

I have a friend, who is a full time auto mechanic, who did that very thing on a '66 short fleet, & included an overall suspension lift, as well.
He said: "That was a lot harder & more time-consuming than I thought it would be, & I almost quit, halfway thru & put it all back together." |

CG has a 68 50th 4x4 frame and title for sale cheap...just switch your gear over to it and find a front, rear and transfer case. Seattle to CA hauling would be additional...LOL!

Re: has anyone converted a 2wd to a 4wd?
people have been converting 2wd to 4wd for like EVARRRR.
Mine was converted sometime in the early seventies. It's easy to do, if you want to incorporate a lift, and aren't trying to make a "correct" 4wd. Like, don't try and make a 4x that came from the factory... use your own suspension and axles and shock towers, (etc..) and you will have an easier time

I have done several. They are easy to do, but you really need a 4x4 frame to start with. Build you 4x4 chassis like you want, then swap your body over to it.

You can use B-52s from DIY4X and weld some spring hangers under your frame rails where an original shackle would have been. You can make a front spring hanger pretty easily, and use weld on spring perches to hang your shackles. Or you can actually put stock shackle hangers in where the originals should be and weld or bolt on some stock front spring hangers. You can do all sorts of ingenius things besides

Not much different from a solid axle swap on an IFS 4x4. With the exception of the tranny and case. Find an old K-5 or 1500 4x4 (like a totaled or roll over) for an affordable price and start swapping and fabbing. I'd do it!
