Just a quick question - Will we need to move the bed back to install a new fuel tank sending unit? I assume it will be hard to attach the fuel lines with the bed on the truck, but just wanted to make sure before tomorrow.

What's your preferred method of replacing the tank/sending unit?

I got the bed off my truck right now , and you still can't get to the fuel pump so I would suggest just dropping the tank. You should be able to get to it without removing the bed.

I tried just "dropping the tanks", but had to lift the bed in order to unhook and reinstall the fuel lines.

We did it yesterday and also had to lift the bed. There just no way we were getting the job done without moving the bed.

kcackler, I wish I'd have found your thread a few days ago. I just replaced my gas tank, and this is what it took to get to the lines to disconnect/reconnect them. If you ever use this method, make sure you stack plenty of 2x4's between the box and frame, don't want anyone's head getting chopped off.

That's actually exactly what we did, Jason. It was the only way I could figure how to reattach everything.

I removed my tank without raising the bed... its tight but it is possible.

I've pulled tanks by unbolting the brackets from the frame and cutting the hoses, but this was purely for removal.

To reinstall, my plan is to install a length of new hose onto the tank, snake it over the frame, then install the tank.

Maybe the ideal plan would be to mount some sort of junction block on the inside frame rail? This would make for quick disconnecting and reconnecting in the future...to heck with those pesky ole bed bolts....
