Question Heater 1962

Today, I took the heater out of the truck. I am going to replace the motor and clean and powder coat the box. I am a little confused on how it works. I had the radiator checked and it is clean and tight. This is a unit that is all inside the cab.

I have one lever which a fan switch and I can see how that works.

What I don't understand is that it appears that the heater has constant heat from the radiator and coil in the heater box. When you move the one lever it looks like it is either defrost or heat out the bottom and back side.

My question is, does it provide heat 100% of the time and the only difference is whether it is heat or defrost and the fan is on or off.

Are the defrost and heat lever the same so that I only have two levers one for fan and one for heat and defrost.

Mine has a small diverter on the tube, by the passenger side with a handle to open and close.....this is 64 however.

Yes, that pretty well sums it up. It sounds as though you have the recirculating heater if it is completely inside the cab. I believe that the deluxe heaters for the '60-'63's had a coolant flow valve, but usually when the core was replaced this was eliminated. Idon't know exactly when it started, but in the later years (post '67) some trucks had a coolant flow valve that was vacuum actuated. I believe this was usually on trucks equipped with AC

Back to the Northwest? Those recirculating heaters don't work for crap in the colder climates...BTDT. They are better suited for areas that don't get very cold....or much rain.

If the truck is coming to the Northwest and is going to be driven in all weather conditions, I would suggest converting it to a deluxe heater. I think the owner would be happier.....that is unless he has already driven it in cold weather and is happy with it.
