Can someone make me an exhaust tip?

Last year I was talking with Dr. Gas about making this for me, but then they flaked out and "disappeared." So now I'm back on the trail to find someone to make me one of these. Pics below are of a car Dr. Gas did, and a dim sketch of what I want done. I made a wooden buck with plans of bending up one myself but I simply don't have time outside of work to get much done. Dr. Gas sells ovalized tube, which is what I was going to use as my base, then split it and weld in flat sheet to get the dimensions I need. If you have a better method, I'm fine with that... I just want the tip done. Anyone?

Re: Can someone make me an exhaust tip?

You can see the wooden buck in this pic just below the license plate. Also, here's an alternate "log" design that might be easier to make. The log would have to be flush with the tip part on the bottom so it wouldn't be visible from behind the truck.

That will look awesome. I can show the drawing to the guys that made my exhaust and see if they can make it for you.

Re: Can someone make me an exhaust tip?

Wow! Have you heard how this sounds? Is it that you are after a "look", or is there another aspect of the project that my damaged brain isn't considering? What's up with those holes that are in the bottom of the unit? I suppose that backpressure would be nearly eliminated. That whole syetem, as shown in the pix, is thought-provoking. I am wondering just what is driving this, short of the desire to be different....which is definately not lost on me.

I thought the same thing. On closer inspection, it appears those are heat spots from weld. I'll guess that it has internal dividers for support.

Correct, it's a Dr. Gas Boom Tube that's been modified with dual inlets. I only need a single inlet. However, at 15/5" wide, mine will need some kind of center support as well or it will rattle like crazy.

The reason I want this kind of tip is aesthetic. The shape mimics that of the taillights, and so ties things together visually. The truck is also in inline six, so a single exhaust makes sense.

Re: Can someone make me an exhaust tip?

Is there room to make a recess in the roll pan to tuck it up a bit? That would give it a bit of impact as well.

Look at the pic in my second post. The blue across the bottom rear is a piece of masking tape (just happens to match the truck ). The buck fits up into a cutout that's about .75" tall, so half of the tip will be up into the pan and the other half will hang down.

Like this...

Re: Can someone make me an exhaust tip?

I could make that. It would take me a week or two, but I could do it.

I'd put some kind of supports throughout the center of the cavity like the Dr Gas unit must have to keep the flat upper and lower expanses from being too flimsy.

I'd make the two round rolled sides by slicing a piece of 1.5 inch tubing in half lengthwise then welding triangles to the top and bottom to make the box..

Re: Can someone make me an exhaust tip?

I think we're mostly in synch! A little bit of this in the inlet side to make it round, and then the 2.5" 90° on there, and I think it's golden.

Re: Can someone make me an exhaust tip?

I'm working on it now.

How long do you want the tip to be from edge of the rear opening to the center of the 2.5 opening ? I've got the 1.5 inches tall and 15.5 inches wide dimensions.

Also, what do you think about a hanger bracket on top for adding a rear exhaust hanger ? I think as snug as it's going to be to the roll pan, a rear hanger will be needed to keep it from bouncing around and hitting the truck.

xxl- do you think the sound will be "unusual" at all being squished down to 1.5"? Just curious. Cool idea

I don't think it's going to affect the sound in any significant way. The exhaust is 2.5" from the y-collector to the inlet for this tip. 2.5" = 5" cross-sectional area. The tip only gets wider from there... up to ~ 23 square inches. That's roughly equivalent to a 5.5" diameter round tip.

See attached pic. I have to snake around to hit the muffler anyway (I can't move the muffler forward because of rearend clearance), so the depth of the cone is more about making it deep enough so it doesn't look funny when you're staring down the opening from the back of the truck.

Re: Can someone make me an exhaust tip?

Can you get me a measurement ? Would 12-15 inches be too long ? I want to make sure it looks good from the back and the deeper the better on that.

15" for the dim in your pic above would work great.

Re: Can someone make me an exhaust tip?

Also, what if I made it more boxy instead of triangular ?

I think it would tend to look better from the rear.

Agreed. The triangle approach was intended to simplify the build, but at the cost of seeing the side walls when looking down the throat. As you can see in the Camaro in my first post, they went with a rectangle with round ends, then made the cone(s) later.

Re: Can someone make me an exhaust tip?

The whole look of the back end of your truck is slick! I assume you are making this tip out of SS right? I just saw this post or I could have given you a hand on this when your truck is up here. My self I like the wooden buck/hammer form and doing it in two halves meeting on the side.
Has your package shown up yet?

Re: Can someone make me an exhaust tip?

Here is the basic confiration so far. I still need to do a bunch of welding, polishing the welds off, add the hanger, blast it, acid etch, and powdercoat it.

All dimensions are spot on for what we discussed. Don't let the appearance of it now fool you. When I get done detailing it, it will look seamless and very slick.

If you like the configuration of it here, I can have it done and ready to mail off Monday morning.

what would be sweet is to add red LED's to the edges and turn it into one Bad-A third brake light :-D

Is that possible though? How would the heat effect the LED's?

That really is funny.

I will spend Sunday on it and get it slicked up and finished. Barring any problems, I should be able to ship it off Monday.
