cam recomendation?
i think i'm going to pull the motor out of my K20 sometime soon, just to reseal it, and check everything out. while i'm in there, i'm thinking about a new cam, and possibly the HO alum intake i've got collecting dust on the shelf.
'79 K20 stock 350 (8.5:1 compression?) stock rebuilt QJet aluminum GM HO intake stock HEI headers and 2 1/4 or 2 1/2" duals 4:10 gears 33" tires primary use is an occasional driver/mud/woods truck. i also plan on adding a 4-6" lift kit, if that makes any difference... thanks in advance for the advice. |

I think you will be quite happy with a Crane Energizer 266. Summit or Jegs for $99 with lifters. I'd get a set of Z/28 springs and do seals as well at same time. I love my 266 in my 327 and will be buying another one for my 427! I had a 284 which was way too big in the Jimmy. The 266 pulls from 1000 rpm to 4500 or so. I run 2 1/2" 'vette rams horns with a weiand 8004 , JET Q-jet and MSD ready-to-run electronic distributor. The motor is .030 over and 9.5:1 With the big cam, when you shifted it was always falling out of the torque band. Drove crappy and got lousy mileage, but was pretty fast until you had to shift...

I took the 427 out of my 67 Camaro and put it into my 68 4x4. I had an Edelbrock Performer RPM in it. This engine ran great in the Camaro but when put into the 4x4 I was extremely disappointed. It was a dog! I exchanged a Crane 272 in place of the Edelbrock and now it runs great! It was a big lesson for me. You need to consider your entire drivetrain in your plan. This includes static compression ratio, vehicle weight, intake and headers, rear end ratio, rear tire heighth, and stall converter if automatic.
