Help with power steering bleeding

I am about to install a new power steering pump on the 72 blazer today and i was wondering about the correct way to bleed the system of air when the install is finished. Any info would be appreciated, also if i am going to a newer steering box with the quick ratio will the length of the arm need to be shortened or lengthened?

Thanks in advance for the help

Re: Help with power steering bleeding

All I've ever done is fill the pump reservoir and turn the steering wheel from one extreme to the other couple of times. I check the fluid and repeat until it stays full.

If there's another way, I'm not familiar with it.

Re: Help with power steering bleeding

Just don`t fill pump about 1/2 way, then work the wheel alot. The air bubbles out into the pump. Then, just slowly top off.If you just fill it you`ll puke fluid.

Re: Help with power steering bleeding

I have never tried this with my truck, but it works on military hummers. They use a GM pump so it probably would. turn the wheel all the way to the right and hold it against the stop. Shut the truck off and walk away. After about an hour, or overnight if you can, come back a try again, if it still has air in it go to the left and repeat.

Re: Help with power steering bleeding

If you replace both you may have instructions to flush the box and the pump - I did this by using my cordless drill - an arbor and an old pulley & belt rather than having the truck running.
You have the pressure side hose off so it flows into a drain pan -- I could just see a big mess trying to do this while the truck is running.
Regarding your arm length - they will stay the same - the QR is all handled by the internal components in the gear box

Make sure you buy a new rag joint when you change your box

Re: Help with power steering bleeding

When I was working on them on a daily basis I found that having the front wheels off the ground and turning the wheel lock to lock several times worked fine to get the air out.
If you haven't put fluid in it yet go to the local GM dealers parts counter and get Genuine GM powersteering fluid. When I was working in the dealerships it always seemed to work just a little bit better than the parts house stuff. Otherwise get the best quality fluid you can find.
