Removing Gas Tank and Seats

The weekend I'm starting surgery on the 72 Super.

We are replacing floor pans, rockers, and cab corners on both sides. I know I need to remove the seats and tank, but I've never done it before.

Rather than spend more of my Saturday fighting with it... I thought I would call upon the collective knowledge of this forum to give me advise or point me toward a "how to" post on removing the tank.

The seats should have 4 bolts - self explanatory. The tank has 8 bolts holding it in- remove those. Disconnect the sending unit wire and remove the gas tank lid and grommet on the outside of the cab. Disconnect the fuel line that goes into the cab from the bottom of the gas tank. The tank should be free to pull out. Lift the passenger side up a few inches and move it side to side to loosen it. Having a second person to push from the driver side will help, it should slide out with a little persuasion.

Its really not that difficult, now replacing the fuel lines will give you some trouble.

Removing the seat isn't a biggee, but having two people is a plus (I didn't). The gas tank bolts were a bit tough, but only because it had been almost 40years since they were installed. The seat belt bolts were a bit of a chore, but they came out.

The rubber grommet on the neck of the gas tank only came out in pieces....as dictated by the razor knife I was using. Since I had no help when I was pulling the gas tank (literally), I had no choice but to cut the grommet. I have a new one, anyway.

So, two people and the task will be easy and quick....maybe an hour.

Removal is like these folks said....I recently did this on my 71, changed the gas tank. Also, mine had a, hmm something for vapor....can't remember what it was, but a couple of hoses coming out of the tank to vent vapor.

Be easy on the grommet if it is original, hopefully it wont come apart on you. It comes out to the outside, just ease it out.

When reassembling, really take your time on putting the sending unit back in, when you tighten down the seal take it easy and slow and tap that ring around and make sure you have it all the way around (if you don't and you go to fill up the tank, you may notice you are filling your cab with gas lol...happened to me once years ago!).

Also, double check the fuel line when you put it on also. When I tightened mine, it seemed tight and fine....started up the truck and smelled gas, realized that even though it seemed tight I needed to tighten it a bit more as gas was coming on out.

i just i just took a screw driver and pushed the grommet threw the filler hole..took an air ratchet to the seat and gas tank and had it everything out in an hour...
