???...Rear Veiw Mirror

Has anybody swaped out there mirror for a newer one that has the tem, compass in it out of a later model truck. I found one cheap at a junk yard. Got the mirror, temp senor, wiring for less than $100.00.
I'm wondering if I can swap the mirror over to my mount though so it want be on the winsheild. If not I may just sale it.

Re: ???...Rear Veiw Mirror

Yeah this is something I am thinking about doing myself.

If you found all the sensor and wiring for $100 thats a great deal. I've bought one before for about $200 plus had it installed cuz it had a LOT of wiring to do and cost me like $150 to be installed.

Re: ???...Rear Veiw Mirror

This is the daul read out. He said it has the senor for the temperature and the compass is built in. It's got the pigtail with it also. I got it all for $82.00 shipped. All I have to do is add wire to the senor and a hot, ground wire it's done.
I went ahead and bought it.

I'm going to try and remove the windsheild mount and mount it on a factory 71 mount. I hope it works if not then I'll leave it as is.

Has anyone ever swaped a mirror out like this. Not the temp stuff but a winsheild mount for a cab mount.

Re: ???...Rear Veiw Mirror

I am working on it now. I have one out of a Tahoe/Suburban. I filled in the original screw holes, made a new one for a grommet to run the wire up trough the roof. Not done yet, so I don't have any pictures.

Gman69 (and Putter I think) has done this mod also. They are the ones who gave me the idea originally.

Re: ???...Rear Veiw Mirror

you can get the "button" and the glue from just about any parts store. I would like to see night time temps higher than 60*F for it to stick good. the glue needs 24 hours to set before you mount the mirror.

my truck is getting an overhead console from a Blazer, it has the compass and temp with a bunch of storage places.

Re: ???...Rear Veiw Mirror

Here's mine, wired & installed. Forgive the bad pics. Bought this off Ebay for $35 new. I was going to buy one in a junk yard, but from what I read, the temp sensor is a pain to install & on some vehicles it was built into the harness.

Re: ???...Rear Veiw Mirror

I believe the compass is in the assy, but the ambient temp. sensor is usually located on the out-side of the radiator support of the doner veh. on most GM`s. its a cone shaped black sensor with a 2 wire plug on it. Maybe im wrong I dont know for sure and I dont know the doner vehicle of your mirror, but I`ll be watching this.

Re: ???...Rear Veiw Mirror

I got the mirror yesterday. I took it out to the truck to look at mounting it. I was going to try and use the 71 arm but that ant going to happen totally differant animals. I was thinking drill the hole for the wiring as 70GMCer did and let the factory clip cover it. I like that look. Run thesenor and compass wiring through the cab and down to tie in to hot ground and the senor is on a clip to the front.
I have a new outer grille coming aswell next week for it so while I have it off I'll do the senor. The mirror worked just have to reset everything. It's a factory mirror also. It has auto dimming also.
I'm at Myrtle Beach until Tuesday so it want happen until later this week. Hopefully I will have everything in by the weekend waiting on the grille. I plan to take pictures as I do the install.

How did you get the wiring through the roof area?? im guessing you drilled a hole through the roof area and covered it with the factory mount cover.

I first tried to lay the wiring inside the rubber molding along the top of the windshield. It pushed out the rubber a little, and I didn't like that. So, since I was going to use a headliner, I drilled a hole about 1 inch in from the edge of where the headliner would be & ran the wire between the headliner & roof toward the back of the cab. Then drill another hole to fish the wire down to the inside cab light opening. From there down along the top back of the cab to the floor & then under the sill plate to the fuse box.

I tried fishing the wire between the front top of the windshield inside cavity & roof line, but didn't work. I also tried fishing the wire between the top roof panel & inside roof panel. Won't work. It has the factory insulation in between the two.

When I ran this wire, I also used multi number wires so that I would have extra at the mirror if needed in the future, I used 18/8 strand wire.

Re: ???...Rear Veiw Mirror

So far I have the senor mounted in the front under the hood latch pointing straight out. Have it all wired except the power wire waiting for mirror glue to dry so I can place the mirror on windsheild and try it out.
I ended up using intercome wires which are 4 tiny wires. White, green are the senor wiring, red & black are power and ground. The routing was a B#@$^ for sure. I ended up using the windsheild gasket and down the front of the door rubber. I'll get pictures tonight I hope after I finish some other stuff I'm doing. You can't even tell it's there except where it comes out for the mirror which is about 2" worth of wire. I even got the plastic cover for the mirror to place over the wires to the gasket.
I can't beleive the wiring over head was such a mess I couldn't fish nothing through the top across the driver's door down the windsheild a pleir no where could I get it through.
I quit smoking back over Christmas but almost lit one the other day working on this.

Re: ???...Rear Veiw Mirror

Well I got it all installed and let me just say the roof wiring was a no go. How any of you all got it through there is beyond me. What I did was use intercome wires and ran it across the top of the windsheild gasket. You can't even tell it's there except for one place and thats down by the dash in the door gasket. Here are some pictures.

This is to show the viser still works without hitting the mirror. Hadn't finished hiding the wires yet.

You can barely see the wires here.

Gasket running over the top of winsheild.

Then down the side and right at the dash it comes out and into the door gasket very little wiring exposed.

Now all that is left is figure out what to do with the old mount over top of the new mirror. Thought about a push button light maybe!

Andy,

Great job on the mirror. It looks like it belongs there....

Do you know what vehicle it came out of? I wouldn't mind using one of those in the red & white truck. Thanks.

LockDoc sorry I didn't reply. I just have seen this. The mirror I got was a 2006-8 model. Just get one out of a Tahoe are truck. Make sure you get the senor up front in the grille area to. Simple wiring also. 2 wires from senor up to mirror then 2 wires from mirror to 12 volts hot and ground.

No problem Andy. I get to the salvage yard quite often and I will pick a couple up.

Thanks again,
