If you are building a daily driver it will drive you nuts! They are loud. I think they sound very cool, but I want to hear the cam not the gears. Just my .02 I'll do a quick search for a web site....

I had a "quiet" one in my Model A. It drove me crazy, but I must admit that the blower is just as bad.

Gear driven cam

I have a gear driven set in my truck. It is an inline6 however. It is a cloyes angled cut and you can hear it, but it is not very noisy. Between the cam lope from the exhasut and that sound it would be totally quiet.

For $45-50, you can pick up a decent true roller chain setup.....& have more bucks to spend elsewhere on your project Maybe Im just gettin too old, but i dont think i would like that constant whine of the gears

I love the pete jackson gear drives
I have one in my supercharged camaro and let me tell you......The blower and the gear drive are singing together!

Summit and jegs high performance both sell them.
Get the extra noisy if you want a "supercharger wine"

Randy, how loud was the "Quiet" version? I bought a new PJ "quiet" for my big block but haven't put it in yet. Is it going to be louder than my 50 series Flowmasters? You guys are making me have second thoughts!

I have a Pete Jackson "Noisy" gear drive in my 388. When I drove the Burb daily it didn't bother me at all. I think they sound cool as hell.

My exhaust is way louder than the gears, with 40 series Flowmasters and 3" pipe I would hope so.

I would recommend a gear drive over a timing chain, I hate changing out chains that stretch.

I thought ALEX posted a sound clip video of his gear driven engine in his 4x4. It was in General discussion a couple weeks ago

I have heard rumors that they could send vibrations though the engine and do damage, but how could this be when gears run so much smoother. I think there just saying that because they dont have one. Rock on Noisy Pete.

I like the gears, but what about a belt drive? Jesel or others?

I had a Milodon single idler gear on a 68 Camaro I had. It lasted about a week. You could hardly hear the motor running once the exhuast was done, just the yowl of the gear drive. I was 17 at the time and hated it which should tell you how obnoxious it was... As far as a belt, it is a low-mileage replacement part. They are quiet which is one of the goals of new cars and why most imports use belts. Our Bimmer motor was redesigned in the E36 with a chain instead of a belt which is fine by me, I hate chaning them. Just buy a good chain and be done with it. Save your money for something that will add real performance and not just noise. Depending on the motor, gear drives can transmit crankshaft harmonics to the cam and valvetrain and cause failures in rare instances.

The only time you really NEED a gear drive setup is when you are running super hi tension valve springs. They'll stretch a chain in short order. You wouldnt use springs like that on the street. Theyd wear your cam lobes to nothing and the cam that needs them wouldnt idle under 3500 rpm so why would you use a noisy gear drive? I dont know of anyone who hears a gear drive and says "That guy must have some motor" . What I hear is ... " What a dumbass! He could have spent the money he spent on that gear drive on a months rent at the trailer park ".

No, I don't like them.

Do it....if you dont you will always wonder...its a 100.00...when your tired of it..sell it on ebay...Sometimes you have to learn the hardway..Im like that it wont hurt a thing..Now a jessel belt drive...mmmmmm.. now thats sweet.. its really good if you want to try different cam timings, but for 800.00 you better really need it.

The belt drives are not built for the street. Most are an open face setup for ease of adjusting which is fine for the track.. but for the street you'll have that belt torn to streads in no time. Timing belts designed for OHC engines are long enough and thick enough to withstand the pressures of daily driving.

I've got a set of "LOUD" gears in the 355 and I love 'em! The lope of the cam combined with the gears makes me want to find stop lights just to hear the symphony . I'd admit though, I wouldn't use them on a daily driver unless you like to hear your engine. With the Gears and the Exhaust, I find myself feeling bad for the ppl trying to order in a drive through, so I shut it down each time the line moves LOL. As for what ppl think about how cool it is? Who gives a rats arse.. I built it for me not them.

i have the edelbrock setup and love it. no more chain stretch and the noise isnt bad at all. at around 2000 rpm i cant hear em anymore but of course that is probably due to the 40 series flows but who cares i like it
