What Parts from the Junk Yard will I need?

Hello All,
Reading about all these 4x4 conversions these days has got me really excited about converting my 69 GMC Big Block/400 turbo tranny into a 4x4.
My question is, I am going with the DIY4x4 Kit, what parts should I be gathering from the junkyard? and what Years will work best?
Thanks with any help you can offer
Rick

front axle, ubolt plates Springs? I am not sure if the diy kit comes with ubolts or not, but you will want them new. You will need a t case, and 4x4 tranny, and then decide what you will do in the rear. Dont forget you will need two drive shafts. You will also need to match the front and rear gear ratio. Brake hoses, shocks, t-case shifter engine crossmember.... Thats all i can thinkl of now, i just woke up.....

before you go to the junk yard you should plan out your build from start to finish selecting and reserching components as you go. what will you be doing with the truck when its converted? will you off road? it will you drive it every day? when you have your porpous in mind go from there. build some thing you can aford to finnish and enjoy. let us know and we will help.

  1. 4x4 engine cross member
  2. transmission mount
  3. transmission cross member (if yours won't work)
  4. 4x4 transmission (if not using a divorced transfer case)
  5. transfer case + shifter
  6. front axle
  7. front drive shaft

his truck should be a high hump already if it's a factory big block. i agree with Tim, buy a complete donor truck and save a bunch of time on junkyard trips.since your truck is a 2wd with leaf springs (i assume) pick up anything from 71-87 for the parts and pieces.

Re: What Parts from the Junk Yard will I need?

Hello All,
Thanks so much for all the good info.
My truck currently does have a high hump and leaf springs. So what I am hearing is, and feel free to correct me if I am wrong, is find a donor truck between 69 and 87 and the parts should still fit O.K., correct? Do I need a 3/4 ton, as my current 2wd is a 3/4 ton
Thanks again everyone
Rick

Re: What Parts from the Junk Yard will I need?

go with something newer than 69.. you want disc brakes I assume?

add:
power steering box is different,
drag link to axle as well..
If the donor has a front swaybar then it's a ++

The drive shafts will be the hardest to find, might be easier to have something made for the rear...
