that you don't have any crap in your cowl area then think again. I could see only a couple of leaves and dirt but thought, what the heck, I'll pull it off and see. What a suprise. back where I couldn't see was ALOT of bird's net garbage, leaves, and everything else you can think of (including a Bic ink pen from the 80's) I'm thankful to say that the problem has been remedied. Now to fab a screen or something to keep it from happening again...

LMC carries trash gaurds in plastic or stainless.

Or you can do it your self by glueing some mosquito netting underneath. I used silicone to glue the screen on. Works perfect.

Silicone is a bad nasty product to use on any steel surface. It atracts water and the metal will rust under it and it will also give the part silicone invasion.... You try to paint a surface that has had silicone on it, (even though it may be cleaned off) it gets into the poors of the metal and causes the paint to fish-eye.... The only remidy that I know for that is either replace the part or add fish-eye destroyer into the primer and paint. Bad stuff!! WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

I used a piece of that plastic flexible stuff to cover gutters on your house. It comes in a roll and did the job perfectly, any leaves get caught on top of it and I can then lift them off without any problem at all. Plus it is cheap and can be bought at your local home depot. Goodluck Cliff

Leaves kill cowls! It's worth anybody's time to clean out the cowl as best you can and put a screen over the cowl grille. In a part of the world where salty roads aren't a problem, leaves in cowls are the biggest enemy if you're trying to keep these trucks rust-free...an unseen enemy.

Oh yeah. I think my truck just lost 40lbs. You just got to HATE yellow pine straw and live oak leaves. I'm still cleaning out my truck's History. I have my gutter screens all ready to go in when things start going back together.

I wash mine out every year before putting my truck away for the winter.

What some people dont realize is that there are little drain holes at the very bottom of the cowl that SHOULD be kept clean (same thing goes for your doors)

What I do is take a hose and turn it on full blast and point it in the cowl shooting water down thru the vent till the water runs clear and flows nicely. The water should appear to be coming from underneath the truck near the back of the front fenders.

This should be done regularly even if you have a screen or whatever to stop big stuff from going in. Little stuff can still plug the drains.

Cleaned the crap out soon after I bought my truck. Went the LMC stainless screen route (although it isn't actually a 'screen'). It needed a little trimming, but otherwise fits nicely. Also, my truck is white, so you don't even notice the screen. Same story, 2 large oak trees in the front yard, full of leaves and acorns. Shade yes, cowl trash, no thanks.

I took the cowl off last summer and used the vacuum and hose to clean it out. I tried attaching house soffit screens to the cowl but I was unsuccessful. I've been considering ordering one of the black screens from LMC. I'll probably need to pull the cowl off again this summer and clean it out again. Unfortunatly, my truck is too tall to fit in the garage.
