steering
on my manual steering box is there a way that i can tighten up the steering and remove some of the play in the steering wheel

The jam nut and screw on top of the box can be used to tighten it. There is a potential problem here however...in that this portion of the gear is worn the most so taking all the slack out will make it very tight on either end. Loosen the jam nut and turn the screw in a bit...it helps to have both front wheels off the ground so you can turn the wheel to the stops on both sides. Keep tightening the screw until it starts getting tight on either end then back it off a 1/2 turn or so. That is about as good as you can get it without replacing the box.
