'71 GMC trailer wiring harness install.

I'd like to install a trailer harness in my truck in the neatest way possible. My truck already has a factory 6-pole plug and harness going to the bed for a slide-in camper. I've traced the harness up the firewall and inside the dash. Is there something that's a plug-and-play type application for this that I can use to replace the old camper harness?

You can buy a plug in "T" that goes between the main harness and rear harness by the rear bumper that will give you the four blade flat trailer connector (turn signals, running lights, and taillights). The brand is Hoppy and my local auto parts store carries it for about $20.

Thanks for the reply, but I should have been more specific as I want a 7-pole connector so I can run trailer brakes, etc.

If you already have an existing 6 pole I think the only difference between the 6 pole and the 7 aside from the plug obviously is the aux\backup lights wire. You can just cut your existing wires and splice in your new connector. Heres a good site for trailer wiring.

Thanks for the link, Monte. You're probably right that that is the best route. I doubt I'll find anything to plug in directly under the dash. I may also look for a 6-to-7 pole adapter, but I'm doubtful I'll find one since the 12v input is in a totally different place between the two.

My 99 tahoe had all the wiring for a 7 plug unit i just had to hook it up to the brake controller and mount/wire up the plug for the back so I could have trailer brakes on my tahoe. Then last year i traded it for a 05 burban and the other day i went to pull my new toy home and was really wishing i had grabbed my trailer brake controller out of the tahoe before i traded it. So I had to order the plugin harness for it and pick me up a brake controller. I forgot how spensive those things are. Good luck on your hookup.
