Motor Rebuild Question

I got a question for your motor junkies...
I just got a free motor from a '87 silverado. It's the TBI motor. It ran ok but has a small piece of the piston chipped off... Could i get away with just having the block honed and put 8 new pistons and rings in it and leave everything else the same? or would i need to do other stuff as well? He also kept the tbi head and intake but i still have the heads/intake/carb from the 85 motor i just pulled... could i use these on it and just add my mechanical fuel pump? I am wanting to get this motor running for my 73. I'm doing the 5.3 swap on my 85 and driving the 73 untill i get that one done. The 73 runs pretty good its only got 92k original miles but she is leaking from rear main and i wanna swap the motor out but keep the motor thats in it now as an extra and fix it up later...... im probably getting confusing now so ill stop, any help would be great!

Re: Motor Rebuild Question

It would be a good idea to have the walls checked to see if the chip scratched the walls. You can use earlier heads on it. The blocks should be the same except it has a 1 piece rear main seal. You should also pull the cam to make sure it has a fuel pump lobe. Some of the later model cams did not have the lobe...

Re: Motor Rebuild Question

dont mean to steal this thread, but im currently getting engine rebuilt. question is, that little pan under the intake, do you need to reinstall when putting it all back together? or can i eliminate this? looks like it holds all the carbon that builds up from falling in the valley in there, i dont know.

They put it on there to keep the hot oil from splashing on the bottom of the intake and help keep the air fuel charge cooler. My 90 doesn't have one...

Re: Motor Rebuild Question

if you're going to replace all of the pistons try and weight match them before you install them. it will get the motor closer to balance than just swapping pistons.

Re: Motor Rebuild Question

The 1 piece rear main seal motor also has a smaller bolt diameter on the back side of the crank shaft, so you will have to replace your flexplate / flywheel depending on your trans.
