Humvee tire fit

Nothing new here. I picked up a worn out set of Humvee tires to see how much I would have to do to the truck to get them to work. I know you guys are picture junkies so I thought I'd share a few...

These are the 36X12.5X16.5 Goodyear's. 285x75X16 on front. No lift that I know of, only heavy duty springs from the factory.

One with the guard puppy...

I only have three 16.5 rims so when I get another one I'll mount all four then try and fit the front. The body is obviously junk on the truck so my idea is minimal cutting of the fender wells to get them to work. Pretty close on the back, but with my trailer hooked up they didn't rub. The 285's rub on a hard turn in the front so not sure how much I'd have to cut. This is a daily driver/work truck so there will be no off road flexing planned. My goal would be to use either the 37X12.5X16.5 Goodyear MT's or if I could find them some 9.00X16 Michelin's from military surplus. I've read good things about both of them and the wear life speed rating seems to be perfect for a nominal use work truck. Plus if I can find a local source the price is very good! Working on the local source... I know I'll end up with at least a 4 inch lift, but till I do that cutting the wheel wells just removes more rust!!! lol...

Re: Humvee tire fit

Guess I should have asked this first, but...

I know running different sizes front and back will screw up a transfer case. Is there any damage caused if I don't use four wheel drive with the bigger back tires on? The tires are just on to test fit, but I have driven to work a few times.

Thanks,,,

Re: Humvee tire fit

As long as the hubs are unlocked and the T-case is in 2wd you won't have anything to worry about with different sizes front and rear...

Re: Humvee tire fit

I think you willl find that the 36.5" to 37" tires will not be so "at home" on the front of your truck with out some change in altitude. however I would like to se a better pic of that bumper guard. cool pics. as for the diffrent tire size in an emergancy you could get your self out of the mud if you had to. if its greasy your ok if its dry ground your gonna break something.

Re: Humvee tire fit

Bumper guard. It was on there when I got the truck so I don't know the origin. It's pretty heavy duty and solid, but I'm not sure I would have put it on if it wasn't there already...

Thanks on the tire advise!!!

I don't plan on putting it in 4wd with those tires on. In fact I may just go back to 33's or so until I get around to lifting. I like the tall thin large mud cleat look, but don't like the idea of a lift as this is a work truck and using the bed gets harder the higher you get. If I could get the bigger tires to work with out making my inner fenders useless I might try it.

BTW... the tires were hard as hell to mount! We had to put a chain around the tire to get it to push out so the bead would seal. What a pain!
