I don't think just like a chain saw. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong about this. I'm not a diesel guy but as I recall they are a scavenged diesel (supercharged hence the 4-71, 6-71 and 8-71 blowers) with one exhaust valve per cylinder and one intake piston port. They also have a wet crank case with sump lubrication don't they?

Re: video of a screamin' detroit diesel..

not sure, but I'm sure you didn't have mixed oil/fuel being burned, so its not EXACTLY like a chain saw..

but they are indeed 2 strokes, hence the reason they sound like the are turning 6000 rpm..in reality, i think they red lined around 2500 rpm, maybe less..

Re: video of a screamin' detroit diesel..

4 6 8 71 detriots have supper chargers and most have one or two turbo chargers as well. they have 4 exaust valves per cylinder and an intake port in the cylinder wall and fire on every stroke hence two stroke. cylinder size is in the name like 6 cylider 71 cubic inch per cylinder 426 cid

Re: video of a screamin' detroit diesel..

When I was a kid I'd lay in bed at night and listen to the Detroits pull the long hill behind the house. Still love that sound today. Go Yamaha!
