A friends GMC is D.O.A.
He was coming thru a intersection. A old man was running well over the speed limit and ran the red light. This wasnt a perfect truck...but it was his. 86 GMC. The cops said there was no way of telling if the guy was going to fast...if he ran the light. You guys look at the pics and see what i see.

...that's my biggest fear in my DD...my 87 V30, and before I read your post I was thinking it's a good thing that tank didn't rupture.

Re: A friends GMC is D.O.A.
those WNBC stories were all a load of bunk it came out not long after they ran that the Dateline story used enhancements to make those fires.. these trucks are very safe for their design..and while the tanks sometimes split the instance of fire is rare

Re: A friends GMC is D.O.A.
I think these trucksare mostly safe in a side impact crash as long as Mr. Moore isnt conducting the crash . I personally have never heard of one exploding . As to the truck pictured , that may have only been a 30mph impact since the sheet metal that was damaged was already rusted away .

Re: A friends GMC is D.O.A.
Yeah joe told me if I would go pay the towing on it...since it was a friend of ours that towed it...and give him one of my 100.00 computer specials...he would let me have the truck. I needed the front bumper, I took the deluxe marker and tail lights off it... and a couple of other things I will use in the future. I will keep the door glass and back window out of it. The rest of the truck is trashed. The frame is twisted. The floor board buckled even on the left side. The motor and trans is ok. The rear end should still be good. I will keep these. I will get more pics of the damage when I get the Bed and cab off.

Re: A friends GMC is D.O.A.
You know Tim... I didnt think of that one.
i got the rest of the cab off today...the tank didnt split...but the the straps go on at it had rusted there and thats where the tank was leaking. The frame is tweaked nicely. I will get pics of the tank and frame later on this afternoon.

Re: A friends GMC is D.O.A.
Yeah, I am not going to ague with you there. Inside the frame was more protected but if you get hit hard enough to rupture the tank especially on the drivers side your gonna have bigger problems. With the shear number of these trucks built I am sure quite a few caught fire but I did read some of the articles on there and most where high speed highway accidents and it is tough to say if someone hitting a bridge embankment at 60 MPH would have been okay regardless.
I am also not afraid to drive my truck have had 3 total and now have two currently. good to see the parts living on in the dually!!!

Re: A friends GMC is D.O.A.
Dang that looks familiar! I got hit the same way, but on the drivers side of a 1983 burb. I can still see the drivers face to this day. No one was hurt (other than being real sore) but it was quite an impact.
Did someone's head hit the passengers side windshield? Hopefully that spiderweb there is just from the impact and not from someone. Glad everything's ok. Matt |

Re: A friends GMC is D.O.A.
That's not recent, don't worry! that's the reason my trucks all painted and fixed up now, because that happened, otherwise it would still have the original paint on it.
