Picking up a bed, what size trailer?

I'm headed up north to get a shortstep for my project and I need to get a trailer that can haul an assembled bed. I think the beds are 6'6" x 6' approx. and I've got some ideas from what I've seen, but just wondering what trailer size you guys suggest.

Thanks,
Anthony

My 16" dove tail works great for it.

Re: Picking up a bed, what size trailer?

Unless you're going to buy a trailer, I'd see if I can borrow one from a friend if the happen to have one. I saw a guy haul a bed on a small trailer like the ones used to haul a riding lawn mower -maybe 8' to 10'. He had some 2X4's across the trailer rails, then the bed upside down and strapped with tie downs.

If you rent one a 16' trailer should be enough. Over here I can rent one from around $35 to $50 a day.

Re: Picking up a bed, what size trailer?

I was planning on renting a small trailer from u-haul and I think there is a 6x12 for $30 a day. What I've seen in the past is the 2x4 across the rails with the bed upside down. Will a bed even fit inside a 6x12 trailer? I figured the deciding factor would be the width, not the length.

Re: Picking up a bed, what size trailer?

You can use almost any trailer, but sometimes you just have to get creative

If you can get the fenders off, it should fit easily inside, but it could take hours to unbolt (GRIND) the bolts out. Upside down would probably be the best bet if you can't get a flat trailer. I looked at U-haul when I got my bed, but none of their trailers were wide enough. So I borrowed this one from a friend and pre cut a couple 2x4's at lowes.

Re: Picking up a bed, what size trailer?

it will easily fit a 6X12 if the fenders are off// bring grinder and extension cord to grind off bolts to remove fenders

Re: Picking up a bed, what size trailer?

I am guessing you have a topper on your pickup, or you are driving an SUV, but if you are driving a pickup with an uncovered bed, you could do the 2x4 deal on your pickup and ditch the trailer idea.

If you have a short bed truck, turn the bed upside down and put a couple short posts in the stake pockets and haul it home on the back of the driveable truck.

Re: Picking up a bed, what size trailer?

Thanks guys for the ideas, I'll more than likely go with a small trailer and use 2x4's with straps.

The tow rig is my brother's '05 Dodge Dually 4dr and I doubt he's too keen on the idea of strapping it to the bed of his truck.

Are the fenders bolted on or riveted on? You guys talking about grinding the bolts off makes me wonder, how many bolts are there per side?

Re: Picking up a bed, what size trailer?

The fenders are bolted on, no idea how many bolts.

If you are going to pull the fenders then haul the stepside bed in the bed of the Dodge.

Re: Picking up a bed, what size trailer?

Just did a quick check of my stepbed. It measures 58 1/2" across the top by 80" long. This is the box only. Add another 16" to the width measurement if you leave the fenders on it. So the assembled bed with fenders overall measurements are about 74" wide by 80" long. Now use that to see what size trailer you will need.

Re: Picking up a bed, what size trailer?

10 bolts and 4 brackets at least per side. You will also have to cut the 6 or so bolts connecting the step to the fender and another 4 connecting the step to the box...it will take forever...trust me!

I would use two 2x4's (8" wider than the Dodge box) and invert the box on the Dodge...easy to load and easy on both beds. Use fabric between the Dodge and the 2x4. Nail blocks (2x4x4) sections on the outboard side and inboard side of the 2x4's to keep the box from sliding sideways. Here is one on my Toyota...WORKS GREAT at 75 no sway or anything!

You can see the forward 2x4 w/blocks next to the shirt sleeve of the guy on the right and the rear 2x4 w/blocks near the rear of the Toyota box. Easy to load by tipping the box on its end and carefully laying it over on the first 2x4 toward the back of the truck. Then pick up the other end and walk/slide it forward on one 2x4 and place the second 2x4 under the back,

Re: Picking up a bed, what size trailer?

Do what stllookn recommends. The great thing is that the box is narrow enough that you can use the tie downs that are inside the bed, so you will not have straps going outside of the bed on his nice paint.

Re: Picking up a bed, what size trailer?

I don't believe he mentioned that it's a stepside...

Either way, there's a lot of bolts to remove from the sides and inner fenders. I'd just take the 2X4's like you're planning and 3 or 4 good tie down straps and that should do it.

As you can see from the pics submitted, it's not a big deal and lots of ways to do it.

Sounds like a stepside to me

Re: Picking up a bed, what size trailer?

6x8 will do, just lay 2x4's across it and lay the bed on them.

Re: Picking up a bed, what size trailer?

you don't want it in the first place. step sides are a waste of time. instead get a long fleet bed.

BTW, where is the stepper bed at and how much $ is it? I could come and get it with my Honda.

LOL
