VIN # question
my old truck was originally bought by my grandfather in 74 (still titled to him although he's dead) and was been registered in my fathers name from the late 80s until 97 and then again in 05. when my dad swapped cabs he thought he included the vin plate but theres nothing on the door jam so im assuming its long gone. is there anyway that i can legally solve this and try to keep the original VIN? all title, registrations, spid should match up, now can the engine or frame be used to identify too? thanks for any help as if its not worth it to fix it then i wont

Re: VIN # question
This can very a lot from state to state. I would check with your local BMV.

Re: VIN # question
My experience is the last people you want to involve is motor vehicle dept or any other state official they only complicate the situation. I would try to get a duplicate tag made. One company that reproduces tags is backeast see link below. I know they do cars not sure about trucks but you can start there.

Re: VIN # question
hello.as has been said, get on the internet, check your states dmv.see what they have to say before going and seeing them.also stamped into the frame is the original vin number (at least it is on my 76 frame, passenger side fender well area)kinda back toward door. but best bet check internet dmv for your area.

Re: VIN # question
ok so i checked out NH dmv and their site bites, but i found a form for a 'reconstructed vehicle' that you are issued a VIN #, but I'd like to keep the VIN # so it matches the original title from GE financing in '74 ( i think its neat that for over 30 years it was hidden in a safe and not opened up)
there also was a 'VIN # verification form but it specifies identification of the VIN plate it looks as though data tags could make a new tag, but im worried if they'd make one without A LOT of proof i guess worst case scenario i could go through the "reconstructed vehicle" process but the state might try to take it as being stolen, i guess the original VIN doesn't matter, its just an old farm truck anyway...
