Hitch for my 61 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hello,
I have a 3/4 ton 61 and I am trying to get a hitch for it so I can pull a trailor. The trailor place down the road said he would have to make one b/c the truck is so old and it would be almost $400! Does anyone know of any place that sells them and I can put it on so I can save some $$?

Whats the frame width??? I'd check and see if something else would be close. I have a 88-98 hitch and its the same, or close, to my 64 frame. Maybe you already tried this avenue?? Throwing it out there.....

I know that LMC has them for 63-66. It's $169 and I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to see if it would work or not. I don't know of the frame differences.

The frames on the '60-'62's are wider than the '63-'87's.....42 inches versus 34 inches. The '88-'98's are in between in width at about 37 inches. You might take a look at ones for a f**d, they had some wide frames

I did some searching under receiver hitches. The ones I looked at didn't list the 62 & earlier models. You might try a farm store, see if they have a universal kit.

What are you wanting to tow? In the 60s most any aftermarket bumper had a place for a ball and were used for light trailers.

Thanks for the responses. I am wanting to haul firewood, lawn tractor, etc. I presently do not have a bumper for it.

Purchase the Class III receiver hitch from LMC Truck in Lenexa, KS or Classic Parts in Riverside, MO. I see you are in Lansing, KS. I have access to a full-service welding shop and we can modify it to fit your frame rails. Based on buying the hitch assembly for $169.00, plus tax and the cost to modify it to fit your truck, I think you can come in under $250.00 complete. Let me know if I can help you with this project.

you buy a stinger reciever tube from a farm store for like $35 bucks, the get some 4 inch 1/4" thick square tube to weld in between the frame rails. any muffler shop will weld it together for you. should take them less than a 1/2 hour. just show up before closing time with a half rack they shouldn't charge u much if u supply the beer.

I did just what fred t describes. welded on a square hitch receiver to an old aftermarket/dealer option bumper. Thats really probably all you need. I have pulled a boat to the lake with it but wouldnt recommend doing that without a real class 3 hitch.
