87 locking hub problem

HI All,
I have a 1987 GMC 1/2 ton 4x4. The left front lock hub knob just free spins when you try to lock it or unlock it. It apears to be OE, its not a Warn hub or anything cool.
The hub knob spins to the locked in posistion when your turning it by hand, binds a little, then continues to spin past the locked in position. It does the same when unlocking. It doesnt have a stopping point. I pulled the hub and took a quick look in there. No broken parts fell out or anything and dont see anything unusual like a worn gear.
The axle yoke on the left front drive axle is also broken on that side. Im getting ready to change that soon, but I noticed the locking hub free spins.
I have a 96 Ford F-150 with Warn hubs, and I know when I lock those in, they spin to a cetain point and stop, there locked in.
Maybe the GMC just spins to a point, and you just line up the pointing arrows on the knob, to where it says "Locked"..I dont know. I also cant test it as the axle is broken.
Thanks for any ideas.
