Added a 54 GMC to the fleet.. Time for the S10 swap..

So I found and put money down on a all original 54 GMC... I just have to go pick it up either this weekend or next... I have a 98 S10 reg cab long bed I am using to do the swap.... Plans are to leave the 4.3 and auto in it and drive it like that for a while... I plan on buying the EZ chassis swap kit with the 2" body drop... I was wondering if anyone is running the EZ swap kit witht he body drop and have pics to share.. If so did you lower it any further? I will most likely end up putting air ride on this truck too but for now just running a static drop... Here are pics of the GMC..

Re: Added a 54 GMC to the fleet.. Time for the S10 swap..

Wow beautiful truck. I love it. It has a very nice patina. I didn't use the EZ chassis swap kit. I've heard it's well built, however, it's makes the cab sit high. If it were me I'd build my own and keep the cab @ 3.5" off the frame. Lrall used a kit and I think he said if he had it to do over, he would have made his own. Hopefully he'll chime in on this. I wasn't aware you could body drop with the EZ chassis swap kit. Once again I love the look of your truck. Is that the GMC rocket mounted on the hood? If so can I have it?...LOL

I have not picked it up yet.. Looking like I will this weekend... When I was looking at EZ's website I read where you can do a regular kit requiring you to raise the bed floor 2" or a 2" drop kit requiring you to raise the bed floor 4"... I have the skills and the tools to fab my own mounts but have been short on time lately and already have a 67 project going full steam ahead so I was looking at the kit so I can make the swap in shorter time period.. Love your truck SGT, My 67 I am building is Olive Drab and I am going with an Army theme... Didn't see yours till last week when I started hitting up this side of the board...

congrats on your find. that is a nice looking truck. i hope that you are going to keep the patina on it.
and just my .02, but i would use the original frame and get the mustang II front and get a new rear. if i had the money and a 1/2 ton frame that's what i would have done. i believe that the mustang II is about the same price as the ez kit. and you can get them with the bag set up.

Im all about the patina and it is there to stay.. Here is pic of my 64 with the original Patina.. I appreciate your advise... I have thought about that route too... I have the S10 already and it has no title so its good for nothing else... Im gonna get it home and see what happens...

Well that didn't take long. Nice truck how did find out about it? I'd swap frames and worry about making it lower later on down the road when you bag it.

Re: Added a 54 GMC to the fleet.. Time for the S10 swap..

Brought it home Saturday...Its every bit as nice as I thought it would be.. I actually drove it to easter dinner at my Grandmothers on Sunday... I am ordering the chassis swap kit this week and will start to blow the S10 apart this weekend... My gears are turning as far as my vision goes for this truck.. I am going to start a build thread on this and my 67 project very soon...

I never really come to this board but those are some sharp trucks you have there. I'd have to drive the GMC just like it is, that would be so cool to cruise around in.

I thought about it till I hit about 55 mph in it.... I like technology and reliability... I want to be able to cruise down the highway 75 mph with one hand on the wheel...

and just my .02, but i would use the original frame and get the mustang II front and get a new rear. if i had the money and a 1/2 ton frame that's what i would have done. i believe that the mustang II is about the same price as the ez kit. and you can get them with the bag set up.[/QUOTE]

I agree, I have a 55 1st series Delux with the stock GMC frame with the Mll front suspension with a Camaro rear end. For my money and time spent the Mll is the way to go

Super cool!
Just my .02
I had a MII in that bare-steel 53 Suburban and hated it. It was a brand-new, reputable company, and I felt it wasn't good enough after installed.

The S swap is best bet on that 54. Cheap, easy to get parts.

BTW, I got a 60 short fleet today

Re: Added a 54 GMC to the fleet.. Time for the S10 swap..

I have kicked around both Ideas... My friend has a 54 chevy I drove with a mustang II and it was alright... I am going the S10 route because I have the truck, it has no title (long story but legal ) and it will cost me less in the long run... I am going to run the 4.3 for a while...

Re: Added a 54 GMC to the fleet.. Time for the S10 swap..

c10,

Have you got your s10 stripped down yet? I picked up a 95 s10 ext cab for free that I'm going to use for my 49, and I noticed that the frame is different than the 82-93 s10 frame. Mine is boxed all the way back to where the frame kicks up for the rear axle. I'm wondering if your std. cab long bed is the same?

Since my 49 is a 1 ton with a 9' box, I'm thinking about cutting it down to match the ext. cab wheelbase, which would be 5" longer than the short bed AD truck. It would be a little different than the norm...
