Custom Horn Ring_1966
I am looking for a diagram or pictures of how the horn ring for a 66 custom wheel would mount. I have seen the wheel in the can someone id this wheel post. I have found one of those rings that is supposed to be from a 66 Nova. It looks just like the one in the pic, but I am not sure how the portion under the ring goes together. My original with just a center cap had a brass piece under it that I believe sat on top of a springy piece of metal. The new ring has a piece formed on it that would take the place of the original brass piece.
Hopefully, the pic will help with my terrible description!! |

Re: Custom Horn Ring_1966
I saw a diagram of an earlier year that the two pieces I'm talking about are the Belleville spring and the receiver cup. The receiver cup seems to be built into the new horn ring.

Re: Custom Horn Ring_1966
olcurt:
I have a few of the '66 Chevy truck Custom steering wheels & chrome horn ring assemblies. I will take one apart and shoot a picture of it. The horn buttom you have will not work with the chrome horn ring. The back of the correct button has a peice of spring steel on it to accept the two slots on either side of the chrome horn ring assembly. I will get some pictures to help you get what you need to get it back together properly. Last edited by LILRED66; 04-06-2009 at 09:20 PM. |

Re: Custom Horn Ring_1966
Here is what the horn button looks like. Also, notice the "rare" 3-speed Hydra-Matic shift indicator with Park R N D L1 L2, in lieu of the P R N D L of the 2-speed Powerglide variety.

Re: Custom Horn Ring_1966
Tony,
Thanks for the pics. I may have been misleading when I left the original stuff in my second pics. I have the correct center cap....just doesn't seem to work right or spring back at all when I put it together (and the horn doesn't sound! |

Re: Custom Horn Ring_1966
Thanks Vin, do you think that would be a readily available part from a Nova site?

Hey Bob...the spacer went out in today's mail service. You should see it in a couple of days.

Re: Custom Horn Ring_1966
Here's what i did to use my horn button that was missing the spring clip. I took some strapping/banding steel, cut it in half lenghtwise to fit the slot in the horn rim, then bent it to the shape shown. I drilled two holes to match the center to center dimension of the rivets for the spring clip. Then drilled ouit the rivets and tapped the holes for #10-24 screws. Then i attached the new clip with loctite and added a 2 lg. x 1/2 dia. compression spring to help keep the clip positioned in the slot of the horn rim. This was the second design of the clip. The first one had to many bends in it and didn't keep enough pressure against the horn rim, so it was back to the drawing board.
I met LiLRED66 and purchased some parts from him, and he said he's never seen one of the spring clips for sale by itself. So i figured i'd try and make it work instead of tossing it. I also had thought of using some sort of sealant/adhesive and running it around the edge of the horn button and pushing it on the horn rim. But i opted to try this first. Hope the pics come thru alright. It's my first post and i'm trying to muddle my way through this. I know I need to post pics of my truck(s). And i will as soon as i figure this out.

That looks way more secure than the factory set up. Great job!
