shackle and hangers question
Hey guys, I have been trying to figure out how much drop I have on the rear of my truck, and what type. I am pretty clueless when it comes to suspensions. I will try to get pictures tomorrow, but was wondering if shackles and hangers go on the front of the leaf springs or the rear. Sorry if this is makes no sense or is a stupid question, however any help is appreciated.

Re: shackle and hangers question
The front should have a bolt straight through the eye to the mount and the rear should have the shackle and hanger.

Re: shackle and hangers question
Previous owner dropped the rear around 4" if I am measuring correctly. I just dropped the front 2" with new coils. I would like to go another 2" all around, but if I already have 4" with hangers I am not sure how to get two more in back. From what sailed2japan said it is hangers. How do you guys suggest to drop two more inches in the rear with what I have?

Re: shackle and hangers question
you can go with 2 1/2 drop spindles and remove a couple of leaf springs

Re: shackle and hangers question
Shackles and hangers usually lower one 4 inches . The shackle attaches the rear of the spring to the rear hanger . The hanger part of the drop comes by replacing part the leaf spring attaches to in the front (hanger). The replacement hanger in modified to lower the front leaf mounting point so it lowers it 2 inches . The hanger is a 2 inch drop and the shackle lowers it 2 inches for a total of 4 inches of drop .

Re: shackle and hangers question
Thanks for the info and patience! Now I think the P.O. may have removed some leaf springs and put in a hanger. Maybe? What do you think? Thanks again.

Re: shackle and hangers question
A 4/6 drop consist of either front 2" front spindle drop, or lower A Arms, and 2" spring's. The rear you have to flip the axle to get a 6" drop. By flipping the axle means putting the axle above the springs. You loose clearance to the frame, so you also have to install a "C" notch in the frame so the axle won't hit the frame. Here's DJM's web site. It should show you what I'm talking about.

Re: shackle and hangers question
Flipping the axle will drop it 6". With the dropped shackle it will be another 2"s, and will probably hit the frame even with the notch. If you want to lower it that much put a full air bag job on it with a monster notch. You will have to cut the bed though. I've made many trucks lay frame, even with 22" wheels on them. All you need is $$$$$

Re: shackle and hangers question
Ihave 4 i n shackles & hangers in rear > wasn't satisfied so Ihad my springs dearched another 2.5 - 3 in for a total of 6.5 - 7 drop in rear .
do not have c notch , however I had to remove the bump stops & brackets to have any spring travel at all . Its not true you absolutely have to c notch unless you are down 7 in or more or if you carry heavy loads & if you did you could always put some air bags between frame & springs . yes , c notch would be ideal but its not a necessity . with a 6 in drop & bump stop brackets removed you would have ample spring travel for most normal driving situations . |

Re: shackle and hangers question
I disagree. Any kind of load at all you would hit the frame on sharp bumps.

unfortunately, i've gotta hold off on air for a bit. i'm trying to get a house before dec. 09. so for now at least it's got a nice static drop. when it comes time, i think i wanna raise the bed floor up a few inches instead of cutting up the box. i still want it to be able to function as a pick-up truck. even with the flip kit in the rear, i had 10 cement parking curbs in the back and it didn't even bump. (i was creeping and crawling tho.) |
