1969 C10 Resurrection

After many, many years, our 1969 C10 will soon be moving under it's own power again! We've pushed, pulled and dragged this truck to 3 different properties, so it is about time.

My brother gave us this 1969 C10 in 2002. He had given it to my nephew, who upon replacing the started switched the negative and positive battery cables and fried the wiring in the truck. Unfortunately, it has sat for too long (almost 10 years! - since 2000) for it's original motor to be viable, but we have a good drivetrain for it already. The drivetrain came from a 1985 Silverado that we had tried to sell whole, but ended up having an easier time selling the body w/o the drivetrain since no one was willing to pay what it was worth. It wasn’t the Silverado’s original drivetrain, but a mix/match of parts.

Some pictures of it with the original motor and interior:







Some work was done to it before we towed it around to the front of the garage a few weeks ago:
- Swapping its original 6 lug front drum brake spindles to 5 lug spindles off a 1979 C10 Bonanza with front disc brakes
- Cutting of one coil of the front springs to lower the front
- Converting back to a manual steering box from a 1977 C10 (someone had converted its original manual steering to power) - less drag on the motor with the manual steering
- Replacement of the old wiring with a Painless Wiring Harness
- Gutting the interior and starting to paint it black

The 'new' motor and tranny:
- The tranny is a rebuilt TH350 from a 1979 C10 Bonanza and has a TCI 2400 break away convertor
- The motor is a 350 1990 Suburban, the following parts have been added:
Comp Cams extreme energy 262 hydraulic cam
Comp Cams timing chain, lifters, magnum push rods, valve springs, 1.52 roller tip rockers and guide plates
RHS 67cc chamber heads, 1.94/1.5 (250cfm flow) – mild pocket porting, valve guides cut for 0.500 valve seals, push rod holes elongated for guide plates. Stainless steel back cut valves.
Holley Street Dominator Intake
Hooker Competition Headers
Holley 670cfm Street Avenger Carb with K&N Stub stack
Holley 110gph fuel pump
Accell Pro-Billet Magnetic Breakerless Distributor
Estimated power at crank: 390hp, 425ft lbs



It was put in the truck last Sunday, but we were missing one lash cap (they sent one that was the wrong size) and battery cables, so it wasn't started. As you can see, the engine bay was cleaned up and painted flat black.



- Other stuff:
New tires -295/50/R15s on 15x10s on the rear and 215/65/R15 on 15x7s on the front.
Brakes (all 4 corners, master cylinder and replacement of lines/hoses) – fronts and hard lines are ready… need to do rear brakes. The brakes and lines came off the1979 C10 Bonanza we used to swap to disc.

What still needs to be done:

- Finish the interior using the following stuff:
Bucket seats and center console from the chassis donor for the Baja, a 1976 K5.
Paint work to finish on the door panels
Replace steering wheel with wood grant pulled from the junkyard
Install old rear view mirror with one from a 1960s Apache (another junkyard score)
Replace simple gauges with full gauges from a 1967-72 truck (yet another junkyard score)
Add 3 chrome after market gauges and a chrome vintage tach (dated 1967)
Install new seat belts and arm rests

- Some exterior work:
Rear bumper was removed for roll pan
Paint inside of box (currently painted some nasty teal color)
Add side mirror (pulled of 70s Nova in junkyard)

For now, kind of rat rod - either stay primer or go flat black with a mix match of parts from a bunch of different vehicles... sort of a no frills, just thrills kind of truck. Down the road... shortened, maybe a decent paint job - guess we will just see where it goes.
Hopefully, Easter Sunday it will be running...

LOL! You know I love my S10!

Anyhow, it runs! Got new battery cables Friday morning and had everything hooked up to fire in the afternoon. Unfortunately, the only way to get it to run was to jump the starter... if you turned the key nothing happens. You could shut it off with the key though... Turned out to be the FORD part that let us down. We had a remote Ford solenoid on it because of heat from the headers can cause hard starting w/o it. It was that solenoid that was the problem.

Runs pretty good, battery needs more charge (had sat for a while) and needs some carb adjustment.

Now to get the rest of it done so it can go down the road!

It is a radiator and fan shroud out of a 1991 Blazer with the 4.3L. It is a piece of ~ 1.5" x 3' aluminum (painted) with holes drilled in it - it is bolted to the core support, then the fan shroud is bolted just below to hold the radiator in place. It sits on the stock radiator mounts.

At idle, it is staying at 170 - 175, so it seems to cool it fine using a straight drive fan.

Been a while, but more stuff is done...

The front brakes are on and the tranny shift linkage is on. The interior has come a long way - all the interior wiring is complete except for the vintage tach. The door panels are painted and reinstalled. The instrument cluster and the junkyard Grant wheel are in. Just need to work on brackets for the seats.

Went to the junkyard Saturday morning and was lucky enough to find a 68 Custum Camper that had the majority of it's parts.... so, we got the gas pedal assembly with rod, the wiring/connectors for the parking lights and seat brackets. Unforunately the bolts on the bumper were in bad shape, so there was no way to remove it without a torch.

Also, the battery was bad, so it got a new Optima Saturday evening. A used Chrome alternator bracket arrived from a friend and is on... much better looking than the old factory one! All engine bay wiring is finished and loomed.

Last but not least, the steel roll pan was fitted and welded on... it just needs some finishing work.

Interior is finished. Since the truck orginially had a bench seat, but we are using bucket seats from a 76 K5, the bench seat tracks and the bucket seat brackets were combined.. it works like a bench, but looks like buckets.

All that is left to get it on the road is rear brakes and getting the driveshaft shortened.

That`s an excellant way of handling the bucket seat mounting.Dang!Why didn`t I think of that?Sometimes (well about all the time) it takes a woman to open my eyes.Can`t...keep...eyes...open.Man it sure got dark.(the ol`man prolly came up with that)Huh?
that`s the way to go! Just like the general did in 67/68.I even have a pair of those same buckets.
