steering wheel adapter

Is there a secret to getting an aftermarket steering wheel adapter to work on a 71 tilt column? I can't seem to get the thing to go on far enough to get the canceling came to work, and the contact ring won't touch the horn button. This same adapter worked fine on my non-tilt column (it's a 70). Is there a difference in the years? Any ideas? Cnut

I'm going to assume that your coulmn is instaled in your truck. If this is the case, the potential exists that the column may be slid into the truck to far. looses u the clamp at the fire wall and pull the column toward you it should move some. Because the shafts won't colapse they are a standard length, however the column will move up and down on that shaft. It's enough that it will not alow the wheel to seat tightly up against the column jacket. I hope this helps. If not it was a bunch of typing for nothing. I had this happen to me when I put my column in. I used a stock wheel though. I'll be interested to know if this helps.

I just ordered a new steering wheel and adapter and i did have to select if I had tilt or non-tilt steering wheel so I can only assume there is a difference.

The difference in the tilt vs non tilt is in the turn signal cancelling cam. On the tilt there is a spring that goes up into the cancelling cam. If you try to put an adapter on with the cancelling cam from a non tilt column there is not enough room for the spring which stops the adapter from going on.

We ordered the tilt adapter for my son's Burb and it fits great.

Thanks to all but I think soba 03 is on it. I have the canceling cam for a tilt, but never really adjusted it in or out when I put it in. Live and learn as I go with the old girl. Thanks again, Cnut
