Re: rear main seal

The books are a great investment. The one I use is every machanics dream. It has every engine and trans including all the specs and its ability to be converted from 64 - 71. They Have them for all different years and motors. I would suggest looking on Ebay. I have done the one on my 76 K-20 and it wasn't hard at all. The biggest thing was to let the seal warm up in the sun for about 30 min to an hour, it makes it much easier to work with. Hope that provided a little help

Re: rear main seal

I use fast orange it seems to work the best for me. Which torque did you get per inch or per foot. You'll most likely need both since the seal is torqued per inch.

What does that mean? The rear main seal is inside the block and rear main bearing cap.....which it definately a "foot-pound" torque situation. The main cap bolts are some of the most highly torqued in the entire engine.

Re: rear main seal

I just changed one in a 2WD..

1. unbolt the motor mounts
2. jack the engine up 3" (might need to pull the distributor)
3. drain engine oil
4. unbolt oil pan and remove (jack a little more if needed)
5. pull oil pump (1 bolt)
6. unbolt rear main cap for crankshaft
7. half of the seal is in the cap, remove and replace (don't put it in backwards... big lip on seal points forward)
8. use a brass punch and rotate the other half out from around the crank, once it's started then pliers will pull it out...
9. Use plastic protector piece and reinstall half of the seal
10. replace cap and torque
11. replace oil pump with new plastic sleeve for distributor slot
12. replace oil pan gasket if needed
13. replace oil pan
14. lower engine and bolt in the motor mounts
15, replace engine oil...

that's all!

of course a Haynes manual from autozone will help...

good luck, not that hard but it's messy and takes about 2 hours...

You should have made it have a sump and recirculate the oil back into the valve cover!!! that would be slick...

Re: rear main seal

My haynes manual suggest to leave the seal "off centered" with the cap... basically don't line it up flush like original.. move it a little further so the gaps don't line up... It's just a suggestion, sorry it's late though!
