Coils vs. Leafs
Pro's and Con's of each....I have coils, worn out, should I replace with fresh coils or leafs?
I hear leafs give a smoother ride which I desire, but I hear its easier to lower the truck if it has coils and I intend to lower it... Educate me!

Re: Coils vs. Leafs
leafs suck!!! wheel hop is crazy on these trucks with leafs, keep your coils we have 3 of these trucks two leafs and 1 coil, if the coils are not heated they ride better then leafs, i hear leafs are better for hauling but id have to see that to believe it....

Re: Coils vs. Leafs
I've never heard anyone say leafs ride better.
There's only a couple advantages to leafs that I know of... 1. Easier to run exhaust pipes... A.big whoop, let the muffler guy whine about that one. 2. On moderate overloaded conditions, they handle better... but extreem overload, coils win that since the rings stack up and lock out the suspention. A. Don't overload your truck 3. Trailing arms rust BAD, and leaf trucks don't have them A. Get nice arms, and keep them painted with a POR type coating of your choice... 3/4ton ones are better. I would vote coils every time if it is a street driven truck that isn't used and abused for hauling and towing all the time. |

Re: Coils vs. Leafs
I love having the coils and arms...think of it as a smooth ride and a set of big traction bars. I have 3/4 ton coils on mine and while it is a firm ride, it can carry quite a bit.

Re: Coils vs. Leafs
Thanks for the help guys, I'll get some new coils. Fortunately my arms are in excellent shape. Less rust than the rest of the truck. So since Im gonna get new coils and want to lower the truck, should I buy the pre-lowered coils?

Re: Coils vs. Leafs
actually, overload springs don't lock out the suspention, but they do help. I have factory overloads on my one ton longhorn and I have loaded it down enough that i was firmly on the overloads. They are still springs, and they do flex... not a lock out. I had mine loaded enough i was puttin a hurtin on them.

Re: Coils vs. Leafs
complete rollin longhorn frame, 8 3/4 ton rims/tires, 2 engines, a tranny, a longhorn bed, 2 dana 60's in addition to the HO52 with the frame, my tool box mounted in the bed full of the crap I usually had, and a couple cases of dew.

Re: Coils vs. Leafs
Coils, I can do 100 foot burn outs, posi or not, and the only hop I feel is when the tires start shredding.
Not to mention, with good shocks, it rides about as smooth as most modern trucks. Once I get new front shocks, it rivals the GMT900 trucks almost. |

Re: Coils vs. Leafs
Get drop coils from one of the BB vendors. They are the only way since the coils "pigtail" at both ends so they can bolt to the frame and arms.If you cut them you will not have a way to bolt them to one or the other.
