radio removal on '74 Suburban - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My Dad has a '74 Suburban and he needs to removal the radio. Does anyone have info or hints on how what the process is for this? Does the whole gauge panel have to be removed? Thanks for any input.

Is it the stock style radio? If so, it's held in with nuts behind the knobs. There will also probably be a brace in the back behind the dash.

you pull off the knobs and you should see a pair of nuts if the nuts arent there you need to remove the phillips style screws that hold on the dashboard trim the black or wood toned piec ya have its quite obvious
then you will definately see the nuts on the radio control knobs
these nuts are like 9/16 or 5/8 and can be removed with a real deep socket
once ya get those out underneath the dash is a 3/8 or 7/16 small bolt that holds the radio back support remove that
you can also feel the antenna cable down there and ya pull that out
push the radio out and unclip the wires to it youpush in the pins on top and pull the wire clips out of the back of the radio
the radio should fall out the bottom of the dahs then

THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP
you take the radio that you removed and put the old knobs on it as well as the bolts etc. you pack it up nice in a box and mail it to me, as soon as possible
