Vin Help

Could someone please try to help me decode the VIN# on a truck I am interested in buying.

CCE142F335747

The owner says it is a 72, I believe it is a 71 (rear view mirror is hung from the roof instead of the windshield). The options sheet on the inside of the glovebox door is gone and I was only able to get the VIN from the door label.

I looked it up on a website with a decoder and it came back with "unidentified" for the model year.

Both the extra "C" and the 2 point to it being originally a 1972 V8 2WD Chevy...

But that rear view mirror would definitely point to a '71. Hmm.

C= bonus C that Chevy threw in for good luck in '72 (your guess is as good as mine why this C is here)
C= Two wheel drive
E= Eight Cylinder
1= 1/2 ton
4= pickup
2= 1972
F= Made in Flint, Michigan
3= just the number they started with in '72
35747 = 35,747th truck done at Flint.

Thanks for the help.

I am assuming that the rearview mirror must have been scavaged off a 71 and put in when the windshield was replaced.

You've got to be careful about decoders. If they are made for older pickups, then you usually need to leave the first C off to get the decoders to work. Go back to the same decoder and punch it in without the first C and see what you get. If your pickup was a '71, it would have a VIN like CE141FXXXXXX, but starting in '72 there was the extra C thrown in at the start. I think it was actually the start of standardizing VINs so that the manufacturer was part of it (C= Chevy)? I don't know for sure.

C=chevy, that's my best guess about it. 1972 GMC VINs start with a "T" I think...
