1968 c-20 conversion ?
Hello I am still new here but hoping someone can help with this problem I have .
I converted my 1968 c-20 suspension to a 1972 c-10 1/2 ton suspension . the problem I am having is trying to find a new u-joint for the drive shaft i have. I am needing a u-joint with 2 different sizes because 0f the 2 different suspensions I had. The person that sold me the truck had a single drive shaft made. so is there some place to buy this 2 different size u- joint ? Any help would be great. Thanks |

I think what you are talking about is a conversion u-joint. I believe NAPA has them. I believe the 1/2 tons used a 1310 u-joint & the 3/4 - 1 tons used a 1360 u-joint or something along those lines.

Here's whatcha need: a 1350 - 1310 conversion joint. Precision part number is 348. Napa and O'Reillys both sell Precision.

Re: 1968 c-20 conversion ?
Spicer and Neapco also sell conversion joints. With the number lugnut64052 gave you should be able to get one at most parts houses.
If you have the old one out take it to a Napa or other "real" parts house and lay it on the counter and give them the "I need one like this". I'll forewarn you that they are usually about twice the price of a standard Ujoint and I have run a lot of them. |

I know WHY people convert 3/4 tons to 1/2 tons... but DON'T DO THIS! If you wanted a 1/2 ton, BUY ONE! They're a dime a dozen.

Re: 1968 c-20 conversion ?
There are many schools of thought in terms of what is taboo on these trucks and what is not. My personal taboo is making a 1/2 ton out of a 3/4 ton. I know I'm WAY in the minority on this one, but it is what it is.

Re: 1968 c-20 conversion ?
Just wondered why, I realize it is your personal outlook, but was interested in reasons if you are willing to share them? I was not setting you up to flame you, but am interested in what you would see as a reason to not do it...we all know these trucks are personal, I for one would not do many things I see on a regular basis mostly due to differences in taste, but aside from lug nuts, and wheel selection, I do not understand what would cause the distress, I understand completely if you prefer to leave it at "I do not like it" and resect your opinion whatever it is. Just inquiring?

How about a truck with a 350 v8 for $50.00 . That was good motivation for me at the time ! Motor only has 40,000 miles

Re: 1968 c-20 conversion ?
I think the only thing close to a reason why I don't like it is it seems like it's going backwards from a strength standpoint. The 3/4 ton suspension (ball joints, spindles, etc) were heavier duty. But on the other hand, if you're dropping it, you're probably not hauling a thousand tons in it or behind it. So other than that, just personal choice.
And I have to agree with you on some of the things I see on this forum. I keep thinking, "Buy a FORD and screw it up, not a truck that's worth something!!" HAHA Last edited by 69GMCLonghorn; 04-14-2009 at 12:51 PM. |
