help with donor engine.... bad noise... NO!!!

I have a 355 that I built for my Nova. I want to put this in my truck but it has been making this noise and I have checked a bunch of things and want to get your thoughts on it. I will try to upload a video that you can hear the sound. I just dont want to hear what I think it is.... bearings for something on the rotating assembly... really dont want to yank this thing out and have to do major stuff to fix it. Still runs very strong and does a mean burn out!! I also think it may be a tranny issue like a torque converter or something like that. Also is leaving a sutt from the mufflers when i turn it on.

The truck has a 327 that I want to put in the Nova and the 355 in the truck.

What you think?

Re: help with donor engine.... bad noise... NO!!!

My suggestion is that if you are going to pull the motor anyway. Take the time while it's out and check the rod bearings. If they look good then check your main bearings. I don't wanna be the one to tell ya what you don't wanna hear. And I'm not going to. All I'm saying is that a noise like that needs to be addressed as soon as possible before any serious damage occurs.

Good luck on the project, James

I am just in denial... I am sure that is what it is. I have put it up on stands and checked it under, checked it over, adjusted the valves and everything else I can think of. But hey I think that is what it is. I have poor oil pressure when i idle so I am sure something is up.

check the bolts holding the converter to the flex plate... if they are OK, and the flex plate its self is not cracked... then yeah, I agree, sounds like a large VISA bill.

I have to say that motor and car sure looks good. I'm going with a similar look with the motor I'm workin on now.

Denial is a great way to put a "window" in the side of the block! A rod knock means the rod/beraing are eating into each other and the crank, and since it still does a mean burnout, I am guessing at least one rod and the crank are junk (Unuseable!) Pull it and pull the pan, I'll bet you have at least one blue/purple rod end, the longer you run the worse it gets until a rod comes through the block.

If its got a mech.fuel pump check it out - Ive heard pumps that are going bad sound just like a knocking rod - pull the pump and run it by pouring gas into the carb. Just a thought. CB

Re: help with donor engine.... bad noise... NO!!!

If the fuel pump deal doesnt stop the knocking then with the engine running remove one plug wire from each cylinder at a time and when you get to the hole with the bad rod it will stop knocking - of course replace each wire to the plug if the noise doesnt stop and move to the next cylinder and repeat.
Hope you the best:::::CB

Hey, look at the bright side. You were gonna yank the engine anyway.

Keep us posted-

Might get lucky and it is just the thrust side of the bearing?? Maybe the balancer was installed with a BFH and jacked the thrust up?? You may get lucky, but pull it for sure, for sure.

Re: help with donor engine.... bad noise... NO!!!

Juan, It definitely sounds nasty. So stop running it!

To all the people that helped him, he appreciates it, and so do I. I was lucky enough to help him with most of the decisions when he was building this car, so I have a lot of love for his Nova. The guy that helped him build the engine is a very experienced engine builder, so I don't know what the deal is.......all I know is a knock is a nasty noise to hear!!!
